Maxine Harper Obituary

Maxine Harper

Oxford

Maxine Harper found release from her physical body at her home in Oxford on June 11 surrounded by her family and special friends. She was born in Greenwood in 1955, and a birth injury resulted in a diagnosis of quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Through the unwavering love and dedication of her immediate and extended family, she was taught that she was a child of God with the ability to accomplish extraordinary things.

She graduated from Pillow Academy as valedictorian of her class and went on to earn a a master's degree in special education from Mississippi State University followed by a doctor of education degree from Delta State University.

Her most recent work was as clinical assistant professor of education and director of the Center for Educational Research and Evaluation at the University of Mississippi. While she enjoyed all her work, teaching and direct contact with students was her real passion, because she wanted to make sure those who went into the special education field could see firsthand that they should never put limitations on their own students. She knew how important it was to never tell a child what he or she couldn't do, but instead find ways to help them find their gifts and succeed. Two books, "Daffodils in the Snow" and "Journey of Hope," were written by her as a way to share her faith and life story.

She is predeceased by her parents, Max and Bernice Harper. She is survived by a sister, Wanda Harper Clark, of Greenwood; her niece, Avent Clark, of Starkville; and her service dog/companion Sonny, who was constantly by her side.

Pallbearers will be: Ben Harper, Marty Harper, Phil Harper, Ray Stone,

John Mark Busby, and Joey Rutherford. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Tom Burnham and Homer Ferrell.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood.

There will be two services; the first on Saturday, June 15, will begin with visitation in the Parlor of First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 P.M. with a graveside service to follow at 2 P.M.at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Carroll County. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 23, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church led by Dr. Rusty Douglas with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Church Parlor.

Wanda,
I just want to let you know that we understand what you are going through and we are praying for you and your family.
I never got to spend a lot of time with Maxine but she was a great inspiration to me and I will never forget her sunny disposition and her friendship.
We are praying for you and your family. God will get you through this time of loss and you will always have the greatest memory of all the lives she touched during her life.
