Robert Higgins Obituary

Robert Higgins, MD Amarillo, Texas
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Clifton Mann and The Rev. Jo Roberts Mann will officiate. A reception will follow in the St. Andrew's Parish Hall. Private family burial will be held at sundown at the Higgins Family Cemetery at Dove Creek Ranch. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Bob was born in Dallas to Kenneth and Jean Ann Higgins on September 29, 1954. He married Laurie Woodbridge in Jackson, Mississippi on July 2, 1983. He graduated from University of Virginia and attended medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He later served his residency at the University Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He served a fellowship with Dr. Richard Steadman (US Ski Team physician) in Lake Tahoe, CA for one year. He was one of several physicians that traveled with the US Ski Team. Bob then joined the Mississippi Sports Medicine Orthopedic Group in Jackson, MS for three years. In 1990, Bob and his family moved to Amarillo, Texas and he became a partner in Panhandle Sports Medicine for fifteen years. He was instrumental in founding the Panhandle Surgical Hospital and Physicians Surgical Hospital at Quail Creek. He greatly improved the quality of sports medical care in the Texas Panhandle area. In 2005, he co-created Amarillo Sports Medicine where he practiced until last year.
The major focus of his life was his love for his family. He collaborated in the establishment of and was on the board of Amarillo Elite Volleyball, attending numerous volleyball games involving his children. He was seen on many sidelines assisting athletes during sports events. He had a passion for his ranch, Dove Creek Ranch, which was his special retreat. He also loved the time spent in Destin, Florida with family and friends, and when time permitted, on the golf course.
He is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Higgins.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie; two daughters, Caitlin and Abbie; two sons, Taylor and Hunter; his mother, Jean Higgins of Dallas, and one sister Linda Higgins of Dallas and his niece Meredith Higgins; his mother-in-law, Wilma "Sugar" Woodbridge of Jackson, MS; two sisters-in-law, Ann Stillman and husband Michael and children of Dallas, and June Woodbridge of Jackson, Mississippi; one brother-in-law, John Musser IV and wife Stephanie and family of New Orleans, LA, and many other family members, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 7:30 PM on Friday, March 28, 2008 at Schooler Funeral Home.
The family requests memorials be made to a favorite charity.

Our hearts go out to you and your family. Bob was so kind to me as a med student coming from AR and then again the next year when he scoped my knee as an ortho intern. He was great at advising me about fellowships in sports and I always looked for him at meetings. He was a great man and I will pray for your strength.
