Ruby Bunch Obituary

Ruby (Jackie) Eaves Bunch

Durham, NC

Ruby (Jackie) Eaves Bunch, 81, of Durham, NC went to heaven on Saturday, February 13th. She was born on October 6, 1934, in Louisville, Mississippi to Henry Arthur Eaves and Ruby Hooks Eaves. Mrs. Bunch graduated from the Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson, MS. She was married to William Carl Bunch for almost 58 years.

Mrs. Bunch was an active member of several organizations while at the Mississippi School for the Deaf including the basketball and volleyball teams, as well as the Pep Squad and the Burt Club. She enjoyed a 26 year career at Blue Cross & Blue Shield and lived in the Joyland area of Durham for 52 years. Mrs. Bunch and her family were long-time members of Holloway Street Baptist Church (Aquila & Priscilla Deaf Sunday School Class). In later years she and her husband were members of Durham Memorial Baptist Church. She taught many church members and others in the community the art of sign language and was very proud of her students. Never one to sit still for very long, Mrs. Bunch and her husband raised vegetables and flowers in their garden and yard. Mrs. Bunch spent many, many hours creating intricate cross-stitch works of art and had an extensive collection of Precious Moments figurines. A lifelong sports fan (an Ole Miss fan in her youth), once she moved to North Carolina she became an avid fan of the UNC Tarheels, Carolina Panthers, and the Atlanta Braves baseball teams. Mrs. Bunch set a shining example of hard work and determination when faced with any obstacle.

Mrs. Bunch was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Carl Bunch. She is survived by her daughter, Carlie Bunch Houchins and her husband, Carter Houchins, and their children, Matthew and Morgan; her daughter, Susie Bunch Masotti and her husband, Michael Masotti, and their children, Michael and Katy; her siblings, Jean Nall, Harry Eaves, and Peggy Cockrell; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bunch's family is grateful for the care provided to her by staff at Brighton Gardens of Charlotte and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

A memorial service followed by a lunch reception will take place at 11AM on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, 133 Robbins Road, Durham, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Durham Memorial Baptist Church - Building Fund, or to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region in memory of Ruby Bunch. Carlie and Susie - I just learned of Jackie's death last night at a visitation for Bruce Laing's wife Deborah - you'll remember Bruce from Holloway Street Church - and my sympathy to you and your families. You know I loved your Mom and Dad...they helped teach me to sign and I'm forever grateful to them. I have so many friends that I wouldn't have without their patience in helping me learn - and I wasn't their best student for sure!! They were dear people, faithful Christians, and always supportive of their church. I was privileged to know them. I hope to see you at the Memorial Service on the 19th. Blessings and deepest sympathy to you both......Kay Satterwhite

Our family express our deepest sympathy for the loss of Jackie. As I grew up, I have been around Jackie and many other deaf folks giving me advices and stories of their pasts. Cherished memories I have tucked away in my heart of Jackie and others.

Good night Jackie, sleep well. Till we meet again!

She was my first cousin and lived by me. We suares lots of time together. Her deafness did not hinder our talking. She always called me Fannie Pearl because Pearl was my mother's name. A sweet person and she will be missed.
