William Gober Obituary

Rev. William (Bill) Thomas Gober died at the home of his daughter, Maud DeLes Lancaster, in Corinth, MS, on August 8. Surrounded by loved ones, his hour of death was a peaceful one. He was 77.
Born in Jackson, MS, on July 9, 1933, he was the son of the late John T. and Maud Wynn Gober. A celebration of his life will be at Galloway Church on Wednesday, August 11, with visitation at 3 pm in the Galloway Parlor and a memorial service following at 4 pm in the Galloway Sanctuary.
Rev. Gober graduated from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. During his ministry, he served Leavell Woods Methodist Church, Galloway Methodist Church and Christ Methodist Church, all in Jackson, MS. He also served at West End Methodist Church in Nashville, TN. Additionally, his ministry included serving as the Executive Director of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of Downtown Jackson.
His ministry spanned 50 years, touching many lives through his work. He led several youth mission trips to Mexico and coached many Galloway basketball teams. His talents included his ability to counsel those in need, along with his organizational and administrative skills. Music was an important part of his life and ministry. He will be remembered for his beautiful singing voice, particularly known for "How Great Thou Art."
His mantra of "that which does not crush me, strengthens me" was a source of comfort during his illnesses with cancer, heart disease and dementia. He remained a wise counsel to his family and friends until his very last days.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Rube Gober, of Pensacola, FL. His five children include George Gober (Cindy), Brandon, MS; Bill Gober, Brandon, MS; Gail Sweat (John), Jackson, MS; Tom Gober (Amy), San Diego, CA; and Maud DeLes Lancaster (Ken), Corinth, MS.
He is survived by ten grandchildren, Renee McGill (Derek), Aimee Rankin (Paul), Ashley Koehler (Ben), Laura Sweat, Anna Sweat, John T. Gober, Wynn Gober, Darrington Ludlam (Steve), Elizabeth Lancaster and Neal Lancaster. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, Sarah, Hannah and Lydia McGill, and Asa and Silas Rankin. Bill was a good and loving man with a great sense of humor and wonderful stories. He was smart and kind and funny and we are better people because we knew him. I know he is singing with the angels now and they sound better with his voice joining them. We will miss him. Love, Sherry, Bob, Kevin and Destiny

As a child growing up in Leavell Woods, Bro. Bill was a special man, who worked to create children, youth, and music ministries.

He had us children do motions behind him as he sang "The Lords Prayer" and it was so amazing to me that I have recreated the program in churches I have Pastored.
Thank you Bro. Bill....50 years later you are still touching lives.

Dear Maud DeLes,

My aunt in Jackson was thoughtful enough to e-mail me the sad news. Thinking of your dad took me back to our Millsaps days and brought back lots of fond memories. He touched so many lives and will certainly be missed.

My good thoughts and love to you & Ken, your kids and all the many Gober family and friends.
