Herbert Gilbert Obituary

Herbert C. Gilbert, age 82, left this life for the next peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2025. Known as Herb to most-and Butch to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren-he lived a life spreading love and wisdom to all.

Born April 23, 1943, in Nashville, Tennessee, he was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Theodore Gilbert Jr. and Sarah Ellen (Meredith) Gilbert; his brother, John Thomas Gilbert; son, Herbert Neil Gilbert; and daughter-in-law, Petra Arzberger.

Survivors include his wife of just over 30 years, Mary Jobe (Winters) Gilbert; his son, Marcus Adrian Gilbert (Kim); and Jobe's children, whom he loved as his own: Amy Grubbs Jackson (Scott), Charley Grubbs (Theresa), and Bryan Grubbs.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Victoria McGaha (Jarrett), Carter Jackson (Haleigh), Mary Bailey Grubbs, Thomas Grubbs, Lucky Wilson Grubbs, Andrew Grubbs, and Samantha Grubbs; and great-grandchildren, Mason and Remi McGaha. He leaves behind numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews, each of whom shared a special bond with him.

Herb spent his professional life as a television engineer at stations across the South, including WSB in Atlanta, Georgia; WTVF and WSMV in Nashville; and most recently, WSRE, the PBS station in Pensacola, Florida.

A man of many talents, Herb enjoyed flying, scuba diving, ham radio, reading, and time spent in nature. A proud Eagle Scout, he lived his life by the Boy Scout code. Above all, he loved his family-serving as a parent, father figure, mentor, grandfather, friend, and confidant.

A devout Christian, he was confirmed in the Catholic faith as an adult. In a final act of generosity, he donated his body to Vanderbilt University Medical School. A celebration of his wonderful life will be held at a later date.

Those wishing to honor his memory may make a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Anatomical Donation Program, the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, or the charity of their choice.

JO ANN MCKINLEY BEAUCHAMP- first cousin-fathers side

July 31, 2025

my mother(his Aunt Thelma) and his father(my Uncle Bubba) were brother and sister - I'm his 95 yo cousin. i remember when Butch was born. i was 13-
i knew he was in tv production - so one day as i watched RIFLEMAN sign off the name GILBERT caught my eye.
so thinking it might be him - I inquired and much to my disappointment, he had passed away just 4 days before.

Herb was a quiet, grounding presence for all. Ever ready to join a conversation, he never pushed one to start. He was happy by himself, and happy to have company. In many ways like Elwood P. Dowd in the play Harvey. Herb was smart, but he was "oh, so pleaant". We miss you, Herb!

He was the most interesting man to have a conversation with. I loved his stories about his life when he was young and living in Nashville. I know he is in heaven right now "having a pipe". I´m going to miss him.

Herb will be so missed. He was kind, interesting, and faith filled. He was patient and calm in the midst of our loud family:) Most of all he loved my Aunt Jobe fiercely and was her perfect complement.
