Matthew Hollis Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew Philip Hollis, age 44, of Memphis, TN, who passed away on September 16, 2025. Matt was born on November 18, 1980 in Clarksville, TN. Even as a child, Matt was known for his insatiable curiosity and love of telling jokes. He attended Clarksville Academy, Middle Tennessee State University and The University of Memphis. Dr. Hollis, as Matt was professionally known, built a career in audiology spanning almost two decades. Most recently he served as a Clinical Instructor in Audiology at The University of Memphis where he was known for his professional integrity, patient care, mentorship and vestibular expertise. Outside of work, Matt enjoyed reading, programming, and playing racquetball. Friends, family, and coworkers will remember him for his dedication to his patients and students, his sarcasm, and his famous chocolate chip cookies. His family was known as the "family away from family" to many of the graduate audiology students, hosting them at holidays and informal gatherings while they completed their studies at The University of Memphis.

Matt is survived by his wife and partner in life of 20 years, Caroline, and their son, Emerson. He is also survived by his parents, Phil and Debbie Hollis, his sister Lindsey (Josh) Brewer and niece Hadley Brewer, as well as many other loving relatives and friends.

A visitation and informal Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 3:00-6:00 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and honor a life well lived. Matt would not want anyone to get dressed up in fancy clothes for this event, so please feel free to wear your funniest or most sarcastic t-shirt when you join together to celebrate his legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to recommend the Memphis Speech and Hearing Center Client Assistance Program (CAP) to help patients with the cost of services and/or hearing devices, or to the West Cancer Foundation in honor of the amazing dedication of Matt's hematology team and their tireless treatment and care for his quality of life until the end.

Matt was truly an interesting and special person. I had the privilege to be his first grade teacher at Barksdale Elementary. The sweet words in his obituary describe him even as a youngster. My prayers are with Debbie, Phil, Lindsay and the rest of the family. Memories of his spirit will live forever in our hearts.

On behalf of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Memphis, my deepest condolences to the Hollis family.

Matt (Dr. Hollis) was a colleague and friend to many of the faculty and staff at the School and in the Memphis Speech and Hearing Center. He was an exceptional educator and clinician. Matt touched the lives of countless patients directly, and countless more through the students he worked with. His expertise in balance and vestibular disorders was unique in clinical education programs. More than most other the clinical faculty, and year over year, it was Matt who would receive unsolicited accolades from patients. He leaves behind an impressive legacy.

We are grateful for the time we had with Matt. He was loved, and his loss is felt deeply.
