GREENSBORO — Donald Carlisle Dowdy, 84, formally of Roseboro passed away and peacefully entered Heaven's Gates on March 27, 2022, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents Morel and Helen Holland Dowdy; sister Marie Dowdy Helms; brother Jerry Lee Dowdy and former wife Martha Aldridge of Thomasville. Left to cherish his memories are loving and devoted wife Patricia Pulliam Dowdy; sons, Carl Dowdy (wife Debbie, grandson Beau Norris from Durham), David Dowdy (wife Mimi, grandsons Hunter, Holland and Harris from Mooresville), Bill Dowdy (wife Jenny, grandchildren Macie and Davis from Raleigh); sister, Linda Dowdy Bicker Galvin from Stedman (nephews Clayel Bicker from Fayetteville, Chance Bicker from Stedman); nephews, Ronald Helms from Roseboro, Norman Helms, Jr. from Smithfield; niece Martha Tucker from Kitty Hawk and special and dearest friend throughout his life Kenneth Smith (and wife Thelma).
Donald grew up in Roseboro and at 9 or 10 years old delivered the Fayetteville and Raleigh newspapers before and after school, then rode his bike a mile east of Roseboro to deliver a paper to his grandfather Dowdy before heading home to complete his school assignments. He worked at the produce market, Davis Drugstore and played basketball for Roseboro School. He was in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the Eagle Scout Award. Donald credited Scoutmaster Gene Essey for inspiring him to reach high for his dreams and to attend college. He attended the UNC School of Pharmacy while also working in the cafeteria at UNC and a drugstore in Chapel Hill. After graduation he worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro before opening his own two drugstores, the latter being Country Park Pharmacy on Pisgah Church Rd. Donald set extremely high goals for himself and his three sons. He made sure his sons attended the colleges of their choice and became hard working Christian men.
A private family graveside service will be held on Friday April 1. A memorial service will be held afterwards at Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro at 1:30 p.m. Forbis and Dick Funeral Home (Elm St) is in charge of arrangements.

Don knew me and loved me when I didn´t deserve it. He showed me what it means to be a Christian in the way he lived his life. I still regret how I treated him, but am forever thankful for God putting him in my life. I am at peace knowing that Don is with Christ, and pray that God gives his family peace in their grief.

We have enjoyed knowing Don for many years in our neighborhood. He was a very kind soul and was always interested in what we had going on in our lives even when he was not in good health. We will miss him so much. Thankful he is no longer in pain and celebrating in heaven with his Lord and Savior!

Carl and David sorry for your loss. Don was a good friend and a good Christian man. We use to play tennis at night after he closed the store even in cold weather.

Mr. Dowdy lived across the street from us. He gave my sisters and me our first "big girl" jobs at his pharmacy and was so good to us! We have great memories of him :)
