Matthew Hoffman died of cancer on August 16, 2022, in his home in Louisville, Colorado. He was 57 years old. Matt was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in Davis, California where he attended Pioneer Elementary, Holmes Jr High, and Davis Senior High School, where he graduated in 1983. He also lettered in three sports at Sacramento Country Day School. Matt encountered many struggles in his life, including drug addiction. In 1995, encouraged by the brother of his heart, Dave Bright, Matt moved to Colorado. It was there, with the support of his family (chosen and birth), that he found sobriety and life and became the caring and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend that so many of us will miss. His biggest strength was that he genuinely liked people. In his various retail jobs, he invariably ended up promoted into lower-level management because he had such great people skills. He finished his career at Walmart in Lafayette, Colorado. What most of his family and friends will remember is his big, friendly smile, his intelligence, his willingness to help anyone who needed him, his sense of humor, and his love of sports. He was a 49ers and Broncos fan, but he truly loved to play, watch, and talk about any and all sports. Football, basketball, baseball, tennis, bowling, darts, pool; no matter the sport, Matt loved it and knew a ridiculous amount of trivia about it. Matt is survived by his father Michael Hoffman (Peggy), his sister Rabbi Cyn Hoffman, his sister-in-law Jane Credland, his stepfather Jim Faulkner (Carole), his stepsisters Christine Faulkner (Dave) and Jean Marie Faulkner, and his chosen family: Dave and Lori Bright and their children, Christopher, Alisha (Elmo), Shantel, and Kae Ann. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dianna Hoffman. Because Matt was special to so many people, we are holding celebrations of his life in California and Colorado. A funeral service for Matt will be held at 12noon on September 8, 2022 at Congregation Bet Haverim, 1715 Anderson, Davis, CA. A celebration of Matt's life will be held from 4pm to 7pm on September 11, 2022 in Community Park, 955 Bella Vista Drive, Louisville, CO. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Melanoma Research Foundation or
The Special Olympics.
