Grace Schmid Obituary

COLUMBUS - Grace K. Schmid, 106, of Columbus, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Wooten officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. February 6, 2009, and 10 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the funeral home.

Grace Schmid was born June 27, 1902, in rural Platte County, to Mathew and Katherine (Luchsinger) Schmid, a pioneer couple who were born and lived in this community during their entire lifetime. Grace attended District 44 and graduated from Columbus High School.

A graduate of the University of Nebraska, she took graduate and specialized work at the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota and Burre School of Business, the University of Colorado Graduate and Medical School and the University of Wyoming. Grace was the oldest living graduate of the University of Nebraska.

Professionally, she worked as an administrative social worker, combined with business training and investment management in western intermountain states. She was active in professional, business and social organizations and traveled extensively during her lifetime.

In 1968, she purchased the apartment property at 14th street and 28th avenue and retained ownership of the Schmid Apartments since that time.

Grace is survived by nephews, Len J. (Sandy) Fleischer of Tulsa, Okla., Mathew "Bud" (Rita) Fleischer of Columbus, Bill (Gret) Fleischer of Vail, Colo.; and niece, Ione Perkins of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Grace was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Walter A. and Alwine Schmid; sisters, Ruth Fleischer and Florence Schmid; nieces, Evelyn Abegglen, Marilyn Brandfas and Jean Price.

Memorials may be given to the Federated Church, Platte County Historical Society or donor's choice.
