COLUMBUS - Philip Andrew Hayward, 52, of Columbus, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at Columbus Community Hospital following surgery for complications of diabetes.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus with Pastor Will Sanborn and Pastor Justin Bebb officiating. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Philip was born on Dec. 7, 1964, to Edward and Irene (Stotts) Hayward at Columbus Lutheran Hospital in Columbus. He attended Highland Park Elementary School and Columbus High School, graduating in 1981. On June 26, 1986, Philip entered the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS John A. Moore and was involved in action in the Gulf War. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 28, 1989. He was married to Kathleen Martin in 1985 and to this union was born their son, Sean.
Philip received his Associate of Applied Science Degree in machine shop technology from Central Community College in 1995. He worked as a truck driver and also as a machinist in various shops in Columbus and at Kroy Industries in York until his failing health forced him to retire in 2007. Philip was very active in the Americans with Disabilities Association and had served as the chairman of the local chapter. Philip was very fond of fishing at area lakes and rivers, was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed coin collecting.
Philip's family wishes to convey their deepest thanks to Dr. Ernst and the staff at Columbus Community Hospital for the loving care that Phililp received during his illness.
Philip is survived by his son, Sean (fiancée Danielle Mendenhall) Hayward of Sioux City, Iowa; grandson, Collin Mendenhall of Sioux City, Iowa; parents, Ed and Irene Hayward of Columbus; sisters, Bethany (John) Wright of Columbus and Kathleen (James) Jenkinson of Columbus; brother, Peter (Kim) Hayward of Columbus; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces and nephews.
Philip was preceded in death by his grandparents.
