Richard Bennett was born in Flandreau, S.D., to Bert and Shirley Bennett on September 22, 1936. He graduated from Egan High School, South Dakota, in 1955 and attended S.D. State University, graduating with a Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1959. His first engineering job was working for General Electric. In January 1962 he enlisted in the Air National Guard and trained in Enid, Okla. He then came back to Sioux Falls to start a private contracting business. Later he joined the South Dakota Highway Engineering Department. In 1965 he decided to join the staff of Northwestern Bell as the Equipment Engineer, working there for 29 years and then took early retirement.

He then decided to try something new and began working for RVW Company in Columbus, and, when their telephone cable phased out, he retired again. His love of gardening was supposed to keep him busy, but it's hard to garden in the winter months, so once again he found a job working for NE State Department of Roads Rail and Transportation Department. In February 2007 he really did retire. Richard loved retirement and could devote more time to gardening and wintering in Florida. He enjoyed his family and was pleased with hearing about their accomplishments.

Richard is survived by his wife, Beverly Heins Bennett; son, David and Jacqueline Bennett, Ann Richards, Amy and James Lariviere, Dana and Ryan Burns; stepchildren, Brian and Christine Howe, Brad Howe.

Grandchildren, Jordan and Ally Feno, Jon Richards, Jada Bennett, Jared Bennett, Kelly, Meghan ,Jacob Richards Jr., Morgan, Brooks Andersen, Jackson Lariviere, Seth, Caleb, Macy, Easton and Leyton Howe; great-grandchildren, Harper and Noah Feno and Harper and Hadley Richards.
