Ronald Fischer Obituary

Ronald Eugene Fischer, or as his loved ones called him Ron, soared to new heights on December 8, 2023 at the age of 82 in Shelby, Nebraska. Born on November 21, 1941 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, Ron was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. Ron was a true maverick, spreading joy wherever he went. You could often find him spending hours on his porch, surrounded by his birds, dogs, and the beauty of nature.

A rosary will be held on December 12th, 2023 at 5:00 PM. The funeral service, including a Catholic mass, will be held on December 13th, 2023 at 10:00AM. Both will take place at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Shelby, NE. Luncheon to follow funeral service. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later time.

In his early days, Ron answered the call of duty, enlisting in the Navy on September 13th, 1960 where he was a photographer stationed in Maine, Florida and Oregon. Following his time in the Navy, Ron took flight in his career. He spent several years in law enforcement in Arizona and Nebraska. However, throughout his career he seemed to always find himself back in the cockpit. After obtaining his private pilot license and purchasing his first aircraft during his time in Maine, he later went on to obtain his commercial pilot's license and worked for an aviation company instructing aerobatics and flying charters. He completed out his aviation career as an Air Traffic Controller in Missouri and Alaska, then ultimately returned to Nebraska to work with the FAA. His love for Aviation persisted beyond retirement as he continued to build and restore aircraft as one of his many hobbies. When his head wasn't in the sky, you could find him building and playing instruments, riding motorcycles, and constructing beautiful hand-made long bows.

Ron is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Lori Fischer of Shelby, NE and his three children from his first marriage to Reda Smith, Brad (Elizabeth) Fischer of Eustis, NE, Brian (Valerie) Fischer of Grand Island, NE, and Gina (Tom) McGahan of Omaha, NE. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Nancy Waugh and Joanne McDaniels, as well as eight grandchildren, two great grand children, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Pius and Jenny Fischer, his brother Roy Fischer and sister Rosemary Farel, and his grandson, Liam Fischer.

Fly high, Ron. You will be missed.

Flying High in peaceful skies. A good guy.

Ron and I worked together for the FAA in Columbus, NE, in the 1990s, until I moved away. I would periodically drive out to Ron and Lori's house in rural Shelby and talk about aviation and building aircraft. (He did the building; I did the talking.) Ron was a good friend, and I thought he was a great guy. I know he's soaring in the clouds and I think of him every time I see a Piper Comanche or a gyrocopter (gyroplane).

Ron was always a cheerful and giving friend, giving me one of his beautiful handmade bows just because it had a slight blemish in the fiberglass. We´re sure he´s flying high once again.
