BARRY CARTER Obituary

Barry Munson Carter, Sr., age 83, passed away August 22, 2012 at his home in Hernando, MS. He is survived by his wife, Joleta Conley Carter, daughter, Suzanne Carter Smith (Gary) of Senatobia, MS and two sons, Barry Munson Carter, Jr. (Sharon) of Bartlett, TN and David Hunter Carter (Karen) of Hernando, MS. He also leaves eight grandchildren: Gregory, Stephanie, Phillip, Brian, Craig, Steven, Joseph and Amanda; six great-grandchildren; and his sister, Linda Kay Carter Barnhardt. He is predeceased by his daughter, Sarah Ellen Carter, parents, Pate Hunter Carter, Sr. and Ann Weatherby Waugh and his brother, Pate Hunter Carter, Jr. Barry graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1947 and attended Ole Miss at Oxford, MS. From an early age, he learned the grocery business from his father who opened the Easy Way Grocery Store at 80 N. Main in 1932. ""My father taught me to work. If you are collecting garbage, you collect more than the next guy. Dad didn't make me love the grocery business, I just naturally loved it, too."" Barry also stated, ""I know Dad would be proud that we're carrying on the tradition he started in the grocery business. When Pate, Sr. retired, Barry succeeded his father and later expanded the business to six other locations. The stores are now owned and operated by his two sons. He spent his leisure time enjoying his house at Horseshoe Lake, AR, boating and fishing. Many of his friends and family enjoyed the leisure atmosphere there. Barry's favorite pastime at Horseshoe Lake was riding on the pontoon boat and watching the sun set over the lake. Barry always had a love for horses and raised them on his farm in Hernando, MS. He always had a sense of humor and could see the funny side of any situation, responding with witty remarks. Because of his excellent business sense, he was able to expand on his father's success. His sons and grandsons are continuing in their father and grandfather's footsteps. He was a member of Eudora Methodist Church. Services will be Friday, August 24 with visitation at 9 a.m. and funeral following at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to Eudora United Methodist Church, 2060 Baldwin Rd., Hernando, MS 38632. Memorial Park Funeral Home, "Behind the stone wall", 901-767-8930.
