Iris Slowey Obituary

Dr. Iris Snider Slowey

Athens, TN

Dr. Iris Snider Slowey, MD, 74, of Athens, died early Friday morning, February 9, 2018 at her home.

She was born in Enid, Oklahoma and moved to Maryville at an early age and was a daughter of the late Raymond and Irene Snider.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James F. Slowey, III, MD on November 10, 2018 and two sons, Jerry and James F. Slowey, IV.

She was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School and completed residencies in pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis and the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital in Knoxville. She was board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has practiced medicine at Athens Pediatrics, PC, for more than 45 years.

She has been active in local, regional and statewide activities to improve health care delivery in Tennessee. Locally, she has served as ARMC chief of staff, as a member of the hospital's Executive Committee and as president of the McMinn County Medical Association. She received the Etteldorf Pediatric Alumni Award, the highest honor a UT-Memphis pediatric resident alumni can receive. She has accumulated a host of awards over the years, most as a result of the marriage between her goal of quality health care for all Tennessee's children and the politics necessary to achieve that goal.

In 1990, she became very active in the Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, including serving a term as chapter President. In 1999, she was elected vice chairperson of the Appalachian District of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

She was currently a pediatrician on the medical staff of Starr Regional Medical Center, where she had served on the board for many years.

She was a member of McMinn County Medical Society from 1975-present, she had served as Secretary, Vice-President, and President, 1979-81. TN Medical association, 1975-present. TN chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (TN Pediatric Society) 1975-present and the American Academy of Pediatrics, 1975-present.

Iris was a great lover of her many Dachshunds and peacocks.

She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Joe and Janice Slowey of Lenoir City and Jack Slowey and Ron Levy of San Francisco, CA; one granddaughter, Danielle Remmington of Lenoir City; one grandson, Chase Slowey of Lenoir City, student at Centre College in Danville, KY; one sister, Judge Janice Snider of Morristown; and a brother, Alan Snider of Maryville.

A funeral service will be conducted 5 p.m., Tuesday, February 13, in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Dawson and Jennie Wells Breslin officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Melanie Long, the Office Staff of Athens Pediatrics, Robin and Pat Bledsoe, Bobby and Vicki Haile, Louie and Linda Leroy, and James Leroy.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made in Dr. Iris Snider Slowey's honor to McMinn Regional Humane Society, 209 Alford Street, Athens, TN 37303; or Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, P.O. Box 159201, Nashville, TN 37215-9201.

I'm at a loss for words to express how much she'll be missed. Not only did she contribute so much to our community she helped our children grow healthy and strong. I hope your family can take comfort in knowing she accomplished the one thing many of us can only hope to do - she made a difference in this world.

My sisters Kathy, Beth and I grew up across the street from the Sniders in Maryville. Iris was a gem and a great role model. I graduated from Med School 2 yrs behind her and kept up with her professionally. She will be missed by many personal and professional friends. Parks Hitch
