J. A. McFarland

Germantown, TN

J. A. "Jack" McFarland, Germantown, died October 3, 2017, following a battle with cancer. Born in Ripley, Tennessee, educated in Memphis, McFarland entered the practice of architecture in 1949 and was principal and founder of McFarland Associates established in 1964.

An active member of the American Institute of Architects, McFarland's practice focused on commercial design. Major projects include 100 Oaks Shopping Center in Nashville, Germantown Village Square Shopping Center, Laurelwood Shopping Center and Eastgate Shopping Center; also, numerous banks for Union Planters (now Regions). Renovation of the Peabody Hotel for Belz , Inc., was recognized for its historic accuracy. Non-commercial work includes Baron Hirsch Synagogue, The Jewish Community Center, Bartlett Baptist Church Recreation Center, and Monarch luxury condominiums.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia LaPointe McFarland; his son, Ronald M. McFarland (Donna), and stepson, Robert LaPointe; daughters, Dana McFarland Riggins (Bubba), Jaqi McFarland Perkins (David), and stepdaughter, Lynsey LaPointe Freeman (Richard); two sisters, Joye McFarland Archer (Ed), Jackson, TN and Joan McFarland Glisson, Franklin, TN, and his brother-in-law. Dr. David Meadows, Colleyville, TX, as well as a many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, J. A. and Luna Bray McFarland and two sons, Gary Lane McFarland and Jeffrey Erwin McFarland.

A member of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, his memorial service will be held on Sat., October 14 at 2 p.m., with reception preceding at 1 p.m. in the parish hall. Memorials may be directed to Methodist Foundation, MIFA or Music at St. Mary's.
