JACK SEGAL Obituary

Dr. Jack Segal, who retired last year after 63 years as Memphis’ longest practicing pediatrician, died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was at least 90. Jack was born in Lipno, Poland. When he immigrated as a child to the United States in 1926, immigration officials at Ellis Island declared that he was 6, even though he always suspected he was a few years older. Jack was one of two children of Leah and Joseph Segal, who came to Memphis to join family members and eventually open their own grocery store. He graduated from Central High School and Memphis State College, where he earned an undergraduate degree in education. His goal was to teach art. Yet his plans changed after Pearl Harbor, when he decided that the army needed more doctors than art teachers. He was drafted shortly after being accepted into medical school, so he entered the army through an accelerated medical program that produced medical army officers. On December 24, 1944, he briefly returned home to Memphis to marry the first love of his life, Esther Mildred Hyman. After the war, he discovered that the second love of his life was pediatrics and caring for children. He finished his medical training and prepared to start his medical career when he again was beckoned to serve his country during the Korean War. Since there wasn’t much need for a pediatrician among the U.S. troops in Korea, Jack was sent to care for the families of the generals who ran the occupation forces in Heidelberg, Germany. After his two-year commitment, he and his family returned to Memphis and he established a pediatric practice with Dr. Joe Parker. They remained medical partners for 50 years. During his many years of caring for this city’s children, Jack often spoke about the satisfaction of witnessing great advancements in medicine, including the eradication of once-deadly childhood diseases such as polio, tetanus, and diphtheria. Jack’s interest in medicine reached beyond his medical office. He served a president of the Memphis and Shelby County Pediatric Society, and served as a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Tennessee Pediatric Association, and in 2010 was honored as Senior Pediatrician of the Year by the Tennessee Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics. Jack and his wife, who preceded him in death in 2007, traveled extensively, particularly to American Academy of Pediatrics conferences throughout the world. Jack was a member of Temple Israel, and a founding member of Beth Sholom Synagogue. He is survived by three children: David Segal, Rayanne Segal, and Howard (Debbie) Segal, all of Memphis, and he also was preceded in death by his son, Jay Segal. Jack also leaves six grandchildren: Scott (Brenda) Segal, Lisa (Jeff) Mollerup and Shelly Segal, all of Memphis, and Brooke Steiger of Los Angeles and Caitlin Steiger of Miami, Florida, and Stacy Segal of Indianapolis; five great-grandchildren; and perhaps more than 300,000 children he cared for during his career. Services will be 11:30 a.m. today, May 20, at the Levy-Cooper Chapel in Temple Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember Dr. Segal with a contribution to a charity of your choice. Canale Funeral Directors 901-452-6400

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this wonderful man. I hope the family is able to take comfort in knowing Dr. Segal left such a lasting impression on all that knew him. Dr. Segal was in my opinion an angel here on Earth. He was my pediatrician when I was a little girl; I remember his Donald Duck voice and blowing the candle light out and I remember him always making me feel better. I did not realize what an extraordinary doctor he was until I had my first child who became very ill with a simple virus. I was seeing another pediatrician at the time and my doctor at that time even after repeated visits to the office could not seem to make my child get better Soon my son's weight dropped significantly and was below the fifth percentile. My mom urged me to take him to doctor Segal and I believe he saved my son's life!! He gave my baby medicine that my former pediatrician refused to give and in one dose my son was already feeling better. Dr. Segal thank you being the doctor you were and for not only making babies feel better, but also for comforting those scared Moms as well.

To the beloved family of Dr. Segal:
Dr. Segal was my pediatrician 20 years ago, and when I had my children I knew he was the right doctor for them. He treated my kids like they were his own. They loved sitting on the table while he looked for bunny rabbits in their ears, blowing out his light and getting a special treat from the drawer. He will be greatly missed, but he lives on in every young life he touched. I pray GOD continues to bless his family and know their father was a good man.

Dr. Segal is such a vivid part of my childhood memories. He was always so loving & patient, even when I fought against getting my shots. As an adult I had the pleasure of running in to him when he would visit my grandparents, Abe & Goldie Walter. No matter how old I get his name always brings a smile to my face. Dr. Segal was a legend, a class act and will truly be missed. As a child going to his office was like taking a field trip, I looked forward to blowing out the light in instrument he used to check the ears with. He was the epitome of an excellent physician and like with many others, he too took care of two generations of Hughes’s. His office was the Memphis premier pediatric office of choice. My thoughts and prayers are with the Segal family, you were blessed to have lived in the presence of a remarkable man. Elizabeth Hughes-Ross, Bedford, Texas

My heart is FULL today after hearing the news of Dr. Segal's death. He was my pediatrician and my son's too. But, for those of us who receive his care we can take pleasure in knowing we were truly blessed.

Linda Taylor

May 20, 2011

Dr. Jack was my doctor, my siblings doctor and my children's doctor. When I became a teenager and a young woman, my Mom told me I could not longer go to Dr. Jack, I had to go to a Woman's doctor. I cried and cried and refused to go to any other doctor. Dr. Jack told Mom to bring me in. He took me in his office and told me he had no idea how to take care of women...he could only find rabbits in kids ears and stuff like that (I always loved it when he looked in my ears for rabbits!). He told me he had a wonderful and dear friend named Dr. Mackey who knew all about women and he wanted to know if I would try to see Dr. Mackey. I promised Dr. Jack I would, but also promised I would be back. I kept both promises. Dr. Mackey became my second favorite doctor and I also returned to see Dr. Jack when my beautiful baby girl was born. He touched so many lives and means so much to so many of us. I still remember his wall where all our pictures hung. My heart and prayers go out to all his family. I know you understand what a special, special person he was. Thanks for listening.

I am sure he has touched more lives than he ever realized and will be dearly missed by the Memphis community.

May 20, 2011

Dr. Segal was an Angel sent to us as a Pediatrician. He cared for and loved all children. His personality never changed - you could hear it each time he entered one examination room after another. He always made that squeaky sound when looking in the ear or using that stethoscope. He cared for my children and grandchild. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Thanks for sharing with us the love and dedication of such a wonderfully special man. Jackson and Hughes Family

Dr. Segal was my pediatrician when I was a child. I loved him dearly, and as a result, when I had my own child, he was taken to this practice to be cared for. Although over time my child was treated by others in the practice, Dr. Segal was always my favorite and whenever my son's regular doctor was not available, he saw Dr. Segal.

The loss of Dr. Jack Segal is tremendously felt by the thousands of children he cared for, the parents he served, as well as the entire Memphis community. We have lost an icon, a precious man, loved by thousands. Both of my kids were his patients until they were "too big to sit on the table!" They both loved him and never feared going to the doctor because of him. His family has my family's deepest sympathy but we also share in that loss. Our loss is God's gain. Dr. Segal was my doctor for many years. Because I was sickly, he told me I could come see him when I was grown. Before I found me another doctor, at the age of 21 I went to him. I was the biggest thing sitting in his office, and it was hard, I knew I had to let him go. He not only cared for his patients but loved us. He was the only one that could calm me down when it came to shots time - I was a like a tornado all over the room. RIP Dr. Segal - you will NEVER be forgotten. If I had've had some kids, they sure would've been your patients. Luv ya!!!

What a beautiful obituary. Memphis and the Mid-South are truly a better place because of Jack's dedication in taking care of so many families. To his beautiful family - We are so sorry for your loss yet we are also thankful that we had him in our lives for so long. I will remember him always as an amazing man, and I will smile as I think of all the times my father talked about being his locker "partner" at the JCC and the wonderful memories and laughs they shared together. I'd like to think that my dad greeted him in heaven with a hearty laugh and a locker in his own name. I know he is in good company and that he is surrounded by your love and shining light! Thinking of Dr. Segal always brings a smile to my face. I was telling a colleague only last week about going to his office, Dr. Segal tickling my tummy and giving me a lollypop if I behaved well. Whenever I saw him, at work or in synagogue, he was always smiling- a nice way for a child to think of her doctor! Thanks for sharing your dad with me and thousands of other "children" in our community.

Bonnie Blaylock

May 20, 2011

Dr Segal was a wonderful friend and doctor. He took care of my four children for over thiryfive years. When my daughter was eighteen she was sick and I told her she needed to find a new doctor because she was too old to see Dr Segal anymore. Well we saw him that day to be treated and while we were there she ask him if she had to stop coming and he told her she could come as long as she wanted to. Sometimes they would all have strep or something and I would too and he would treat me along with them. During our first years with Dr Segal we were on a very tight budget (with four kidsand all), we had insurance but then there was the twenty percent we had to pay. Well that would run up quite a bit every year but he never sent a bill or said a word. Then at Income tax time we would pay it in full and start over the next year. My husband mentioned to him once about the way we had to pay and Dr Segal said that's when he got to go on vacation and he laughed. He truly was a Very Special man but then I'm sure you all know that better than me. I'm so very sorry for your loss. God bless you . Paul & Bonnie Blaylock

I am proud to say that I am one of the 300,000 Dr. Segal took care of in times of illness. So are both of my children!
I once asked him if he realized that many of his patients had grown up, and gone on to greater things because of his efforts. (Many of our esteemed Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Clergy and Teachers.) He would smile and humbly say, that this is what God wanted him to do.
Far too many of our written and spoken works are occupied by dictators, tyrannts, ne'er do wells and those who cheaply valued life. Far too few of our written and spoken works are occupied by those truly great men who went about their chosen professions quietly and humbly, serving their fellow man. Dr. Segal was one of these great men we seldom hear about. He was one of those we encounter who leave the very air signed with their honor, dedication and profound integrity.
I grieve with his family as we all should. We have lost a great healer and also a most valuable, and loyal friend. He was proof there is a loving God who lets us know what true greatness is, in physical form.

I will always remember your happy little tune you'd sing upon entering a patients room, your smile and kindness you extended to others, and your extreme joy you portraited in your Halloween costumes especially when it involved tights to show your fit legs.. :) But most of all what a wonderful person you were to work with for the 11 yrs. I worked with you. You will truly be missed, I love you Dr. Segal enjoy your eternal peace with your lovely wife. <3
