My deepest sympathy goes out to Jim's family, friends, and colleagues. He will be sorely missed within and outside of our department at UTHSC, not only for his expertise but also his ability to share his enthusiasm for neuroanatomy and his love of teaching it as well. I enjoyed teaching neuroanatomy along side Jim and greatly appreciated his kindness, knowledge, and patience.

For many years I taught with Jim in Medical Histology. He was a rock of dependability in that course, consistently giving clear, complete and accurate lectures that were standards by which others should be measured. He was also a kind man that would grant any reasonable favor asked of him. I remember one occasion when I was the recipient of this generous nature. I was working on a book that contained a scene set in a single engine airplane in flight. Knowing nothing about the sounds and feelings of such a situation and aware that Jim was a pilot, I asked if he’d take me up and show me that world. About a week later we took off from the Olive branch airport, flew over to the main airport, and landed for a brief look around the facilities that private planes used. It was only after we’d returned to Olive branch and were walking back to our cars that I asked Jim who the guy was in the co-pilot’s seat during the flight. “Oh,” Jim said. “That was my flight instructor. I haven’t flown for several years and I thought it’d be good to have him along.” So I learned only after the flight that Jim was concerned that his skills might be a tad rusty. Looking back I was glad I didn’t know that when the plane was laboring to gain altitude on our initial take off and I was wondering if we were going to end up among the herd of cows below us. I’m going to miss him, but I’m comforted by the thought that he no longer needs an engine to reach the heavens.

I have known Jim and his family for almost 40 years and I will miss him greatly. He was such a significant member of our department and has contributed tirelessly to the total mission of the department. His earler research was primary in the department and and more recently Jim contributed greatly to the teaching program. I will miss all the advice and information he has helped me with over all these years.

Jim was a wonderful person with great concern for everyone and he will be missed so much.

I have had the great privilege to work closely with Jim Evans in the medical Neuroanatomy course for several years. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of anatomy and was fun to work with. Jim was an excellent teacher and colleague and I will miss his kind and gentle manner.

Jim was a wonderful colleague and teacher. We became friends shortly after I arrived in Memphis, sharing a number of common issues. We have supported each other through the years, and I always saw him as a kind and gentle soul. He was very encouraging to my son regarding a possible career as a pilot. I, and we, will miss him. My deepest condolences to you.

Dr. Jim Evans was an incredibly valuable member of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center for 40 years. His instruction of medical students was outstanding and thorough- he won at least 12 teaching awards during his tenure here. In addition he was a gentleman of the first order, a fine and helpful colleague. We shall miss him greatly.
