Fifty years ago at a summer school organized by Father Henon, Vince Nabholz taught my older brother and me our Latin to become altar boys at St. Anne Church on Highland in Memphis; his Latin always had a rather authentic-sounding accent. He was then three years ahead of me at St. Anne School. He was a quiet, intelligent, reliable, non-ostentatious guy, who after graduating from Christian Brothers High School in May 1963, spent a year or two in the seminary at St. Bernard's in Alabama in pursuit of a long-time vocational decision. By the time I entered Christian Brothers College in September 1965, he had left the seminary and was a sophomore at the College majoring in biology. The next academic year (1966-1967) we were in Organic Chemistry together, and our senior year (Spring 1968) we were among a minority of perhaps eight in a Christology course who were not student Brothers.

He probably eked out a semester or two at the University of Georgia before being drafted, because I next saw him about dusk at CBC in 1969 while on leave just after he completed his basic training (or advanced individual training). Characteristically, he had prepared for his military induction by setting out for himself a rather rigorous physical training program, which he commended to me to make Army basic training easier, as I was about to be drafted too. In succeeding years I saw him briefly at his parents' home in Memphis at Christmas a couple of times after 1971, enough to learn that he had earned his doctorate at the University of Georgia; his younger brother, Marty, was a close highschool friend. He was a religiously committed man of integrity, the sort of person with whom I wish I had kept in better contact over the years and a man whose loss would be deeply felt by all who were privileged to know him.

Vince was a brilliant guy. His work on the EPA's new chemical program was really outstanding. He also had a world wide reputation as being a trusted source at EPA for information on scientific modeling activites and was often contacted for advice. Vince was a great guy and really liked running the OPPT coffee club. He will be missed.

Jerry & I want Sue, Pam & Karen to know that we are keeping them in our Prayers. We have not seen Vince since we were so much younger in Memphis, but remembering him and all the Sunday morning visits at Mamas does bring a smile to my heart. He was always gentle and kind as a young boy and I am sure that followed him through his life.
We are sorry we were unable to be there for the services but we were there in spirit. I also want to give Marty, Ann & Jeanne our deepest sympathy. You will also be in my prayers.
My Love to all.

Two weeks ago I told Vince that I considered him my friend while sharing information, and sincerely he said I'm your friend. Truely,Vince was a great person on many levels and words nor stories of admirations about Vince can replace what we have loss.

Vince inspired his colleagues with his grasp of scientific issues, not only in his own speciality but in related ones as well. Even more, he was the heart and soul, and funny bone, of EPA. His passing leaves a huge gap. We shall miss him, but we are glad to have known him. My condolences & prayers.
