Dr. L. C. Bierman, a retired optometrist, died at his home on January 30, 2016 following a brief illness. Dr. Bierman was born in Clinton County, IL on June 18, 1929. He attended high schools in Kell and Centralia, IL. After serving 18 months with the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, he entered Illinois College at Jacksonville, IL and then Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN in 1951. Three years later, he opened his optometry practice in Covington. Upon moving to Covington, Dr. Bierman immediately became a part of his new community, joining the Jaycees, Covington Exchange Club and First United Methodist Church. In addition to serving as president of the Jaycees, he was named Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1958 and participated in fund-raising drives and various projects for Cobb-Parr Park, including the planting of the park's numerous pecan trees which survive to this day. He also served as president of the Exchange Club where he was instrumental in the construction of a scout building in the park. He later became scoutmaster for the club-sponsored scout troop and was still an active member of the Exchange Club. At First United Methodist Church, Dr. Bierman remained a loyal and faithful member, serving on the administrative board and singing in the sanctuary choir. He also was a member of the Methodist Men, served as lay speaker, delegate to lay witness missions and a member and president of an adult Sunday School Class. Dr. Bierman was elected to the Covington City Board of Mayor and Alderman in 1959. It was during this time that he acquired an interest in politics. In the ensuing years, he became actively involved in the Republican Party, serving on the Tipton County Election Commission, as chairman of the Tipton County Republican Party and as a member of the Republican State Executive Committee in 1972. He also served as Colonel on the staff of Governer Winfield Dunn in the early 1970's. A member of the regional library board, Dr. Bierman helped play a major role in the location of a new library in Covington in the 1960's. Using his involvement in community affairs to enhance the optometric profession as a whole, Dr. Bierman conducted visual screening in the Covington and Tipton County School systems in cooperation with the Parent-Teacher Association and his ability to identify with his patients and the community placed Dr. Bierman in high regard, both for his personal integrity and his professional skill. He was affectionately known as
"LC" (abbreviation for Lyndle Charles) or just as "Doc" for those who knew him. After his retirement in 1999, Dr. Bierman enjoyed life pursing his many passions, including gardening, fishing, hunting and developing his small farm. He especially enjoyed time at his vacation home on the Tennessee River near Camden, TN. Dr. Bierman relished working on his farm where he had a small orchard and a huge garden. He was well known for distributing the fruits of his labor among his many friends and received tremendous satisfaction in doing so.
