Richard Rosebrough Obituary

Richard Foster Rosebrough, Jr.

Memphis, TN

Richard Foster Rosebrough, Jr. died peacefully in his home on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Richard was involved in Memphis music from the early 60's to the end of his life. He was a Producer, Recording Engineer, Song Writer and Drummer. Richard worked with many of the artists that shaped the Memphis sound of the 60's to the present. Richard was active from the earliest beginnings of Ardent Recording on National where he worked with and was trained by John Fry to working with Sam Phillips at Phillips Recording Service on Madison. Big Star, Chris Bell, Alamo, Alex Chilton, Sid Selvidge, Jim Dickinson and many, many others employed Richard's skill, talent and ears as a recording engineer and drummer. Richard is quoted in many books on the Memphis musical scene during this period of time including many of the books on Big Star. Richard was an eyewitness, willing participant and central character in that musical scenes' creation. Richard was the regular drummer with Mud Boy and the Neutrons, founding member/drummer/producer/engineer for Alamo, drummer for the Verbs, sometime drummer/engineer/song writer for Big Star and was the drummer for Lee Baker and the Agitators. Richard was a gentle man who was happy to expound and pontificate on the ins and outs of Memphis music. Because Richard was an eyewitness to these events he possessed sage insight of those goings on. Richard will be sadly missed by all of his friends and extended family. Richard's parents who preceded him in death were Helen Rosebrough and Richard Foster Rosebrough. Richard leaves his sisters, Helen Rosebrough Hlavin (Bill) of Elk Grove, Illinois and Martha Rosebrough Parker (Rick) of Athens, Georgia. Visitation will be at Memorial Park Saturday October 24th at 10 a.m. with a graveside service to follow at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Church Health Center.

Our garage band, Ye Mariners, enjoying a one night reunion with Richard at Ardent Studios.
I was fortunate to have played in a group with Richard.

I worked with Richard at Auditronics in 1991-1992. Moved away for a new job, but every so often I'd find myself in Memphis and we'd go to the Rendezvous for lunch or dinner. One of the best was when I chaperoned my son's high school band trip. On the way to New Orleans, we stopped in Memphis to tour Graceland. Neither my son nor I were interested, so we called Richard who was waiting for us in the lot. We sped down to the Rendezvous, ate, and he had us back at the buses just as the rest of the group was coming out.

I have lots of good memories of Richard. Over the past few months, I spent several weeks in Olive Branch and am sorry he wasn't there to go have some BBQ with.
