ROBERT SANFORD Obituary

Dr. Robert “Alex” Sanford, Sr., died on October 17, 2013. He was 72. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Martha Sanford; five children, Dr. Louie Lundy Roberts (Brooke) of Houston, TX; Margaret “Tedie” Cole (Chance) of Fort Smith, AR; Robert Alexander Jr. (Susie) of Fayetteville, AR; Sydney Marie Sanford and Kathryn Nicole Sanford, both of Memphis, TN. He leaves nine grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Cox of Little Rock, AR. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Sanford, a pediatric neurosurgeon, saved the lives of many children with brain tumors and other neurologic problems. He founded the pediatric surgical brain tumor program at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital a collaboration with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Semmes-Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute. It is now the largest program of its kind in the country. He served as director of the Neuroscience Unit at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and chief of pediatric neurosurgery at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He was also a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Sanford was beloved by physicians, residents, staff, patients and families alike for his talent, dedication, tough love and most of all for his heart for saving children’s lives. He received many accolades and honors throughout his lifetime. In 2010 he was honored by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Section on Pediatric Neurological Surgery as recipient of the Franc Ingraham Award for distinguished service. He was one of fewer than 10 neurosurgeons ever bestowed this high honor. In 2012, he was honored by the Memphis Business Journal with the Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2007, Dr. Sanford was honored as a Health Care Heroes finalist in the physician category. Born in Connecticut, Dr. Sanford graduated from Hendrix College in 1963 and the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in 1967. He completed an internship at the University of Minneapolis and residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He also served in the U.S. Army for two years as a neurosurgeon during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Dr. Sanford’s dedication and hard work won the respect of his medical colleagues throughout the country. He served on the pediatric section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons board for 12 years and served as the organization’s secretary. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons Pediatric Section, American Medical Association, Central Medical Society, Memphis Neuroscience Society, Memphis Journal Review Club, Memphis and Mid-South Pediatric Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and others. Dr. Sanford published more than 100 medical papers throughout his career in addition to regular presentations and speeches at national neurosurgery meetings. Thanks to Dr. Sanford’s vision, the brain tumor surgical program now has approximately a 90 percent resection (or removal) success rate compared to a national average of 50 percent for certain types of tumors. Dr. Sanford’s stipulation in coming to Memphis required that the hospital accept any child who needed help regardless of his or her family's ability to pay. Dr. Sanford emphasized this same ethic in teaching upcoming neurosurgeons who continue to exercise this compassionate yet tenacious approach to pediatric neurosurgery. Even during the years he fought his illness, Dr. Sanford spent time teaching, advising residents and fellows and encouraging the staff and physicians to continue their mission of saving children’s lives. Dr. Sanford was a fun-loving, generous husband and father who enjoyed golfing, duck hunting, boating, and his farm in Arkansas. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and telling stories -- lots of stories. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 20, from 5-7 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis. The memorial service will be on Monday, October 21, at noon at Hope Church, 8500 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova, Tenn. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Sanford requested that all memorials be sent to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital-Brain Tumor Program, PO Box 41817, Memphis, TN 38174. I am so sorry that I didn't learn of Alec's death until after the funeral. In addition to being a great doctor and surgeon, he was a great person as well. He was a great help to me during one of the darkest times in my life and I will always be grateful. I have spent many evenings at his house just talking. He will definitely be missed.

I am so very sad to learn about the death of Alex. I last saw him at our 50th Hendrix reunion this year and had a very moving encounter with him. As we talked, his compassion, gentleness, and overall specialness was so apparent. I feel so blessed to have had this contact with such a wonderful man. My heart goes out to you as you struggle to endure the sadness of your loss.

Dr. Sanford was the most compassionate Dr. I have ever known. He treated my sister, Tammy, My Mom Peggy Marshall and many of my cousins and Aunts over the years for VHL tumors. Many of my family would not have survived without him and his knowledge and skills. We will all deeply miss him and we all loved him deeply. Sheryl Cook

My daughter, Breanna Jean Gann, would not be celebrating her 13th birthday this coming Friday if it wasn't for Dr. Sanford and his team at Le Bonheur. He was so kind every time he came to talk with us about what the next step would be. Because of Dr. Sanford's wonderful bedside manner, my daughter has never been afraid of any doctor, and was a real trooper with her latest injury (a burn). My daughter was disappointed when we found he had retired, but we understand. To Dr. Sanford's children and grandchildren, remember the good times you had with your father/grandfather. I lost both my father and grandfather within 5 months of each other just over 11 years ago. There's not a day goes by that something doesn't remind me of them, God gives me the peace that I will one day see them again. Thanks for the support you gave Dr. Sanford in his practice.

What can we say but our son, John Brian Jones, would not be here today, if not for Dr. Sanford. God performed His miracles through this great, brilliant, kind, passionate and talented man. At the beginning of Dr. Sanford's brain tumor program dream at LeBonheur Children's Hospital, our son was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Our family knew of his vision to make the hospital stay the best that could possibly be for children with brain tumors and are thrilled that his vision has become a reality at this great hospital. Dr. Sanford operated on our son four times (1 stereotactic biopsy and 3 brain surgeries to get one tumor). How can mere words express just how much Dr. Sanford meant to our family? Because of him, our son has a life and one of quality! He went on to become a tax lawyer and married this year. We thank God for the life of Dr. Sanford and thank his family and friends for sharing him with all of the many patients that loved and cherished him dearly. May he rest in peace eternally with our dear Lord and Savior.

Dr. Sanford did surgery on my daughter Alexandria 27 years ago at the age of 3 months old, then again 2 year later, we made our trips to Memphis to see him every year until he retired, he was such a wonderful man, he was loved by so many, I hope he got to play golf like he wanted to after he retired, God be with you family and your LeBonheur family, thoughts and prayers are with you all. Rest In Peace Dr. Sanford.

We are saddened to hear about the loss of Dr. Sanford. He was a VERY special man. Dr. Sanford was one of the first doctors we met when our son was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Before Dr. Sanford operated I asked him: "Will our son grow up to be a man?" Dr. Sanford answered: "Yes, he will grow up to be a man." Those were the most beautiful words a parent could hear when faced with such a diagnosis! Dr. Sanford told the truth. Our son is now cancer-free, healthy, and a grown MAN with a promising future ahead of him thanks to the wonderful care he received starting with Dr. Sanford. We know Dr. Sanford is now on the receiving end of the love and care that he gave to so many others. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Sanford and he will NEVER be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Sanford's family and friends.

Dear Family,
My memories of Alex are from his time at Calvary Episcopal Church and LeBonheur. He was a man of great Faith who practiced that Faith at the bedside of many patients, particularly in times of crisis. It was a pleasure to practice along side him. He will be missed.

My son, Robert, and I are so sorry for your loss. Dr. Sanford removed Robert's medulloblastoma brain tumor on Friday, October 11, 1996. Robert is fine today thanks to Dr. Sanford and Dr. Amar Gajjar's SJ96 protocol at St. Jude. Dr. Sanford blessed the world with his skill as a surgeon and will be greatly missed.
