My memory of Stephen Tapp is a benign, happy, and grateful one. When I first came from Arkansas to live in Memphis seeking how I might develop as an artist, Stephen was among the first of those few with whom I found an affinity. He supported my efforts on an artistic levels sharing ideas and inspiration. On a practical level, he understood the day to day challenges I faced primarily in finding a place to live. He introduced me to everyone whom he thought might be of help. He even had me invited to the parlor of a kind lady - perhaps a relative - living in a well-appointed flat in Annesdale to discuss my situation. He himself was living in an apartment at the time in the Buntyn area where we listened records and talked about the many performers in Memphis during this vibrant period in the aftermath of the turbulent '60s. For me, Stephen Tapp embodied the gentle, yet strongly self-defined spirit of Memphis in its hospitality, interest, and support of those seeking to express what cannot be seen, what cannot be bought, and what cannot be thwarted.

My god, we're really gonna miss you Stephen. I had no idea you were ill. You were one of the first people I met in Memphis, and from the beginning were a supporter up to the last minute of me and of many other artists in memphis who sang the song of truth, beauty, justice, and the fraternity of man. Not only a gentleman of impeccable taste, you were 100% Memphis in the most positive way. Love you, Stephan.

Stephen was one who gave to the larger community in his blog, always funny, smart. I met him in 1970. Proud to say he was my friend.
