PAUL WILLIAM "BILL" DUNCAN

PORTSMOUTH-Paul William "Bill" Duncan, D.O., 80, of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away with Jennifer, his step-daughter by his side at SOMC Hospice Inpatient Care Center on Friday, January 6, 2017. Dr. Duncan fought a five-year-long battle with Asbestosis and Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born on January 30, 1936 in New Boston, Ohio, to Paul Harkless and Maxine Virginia Brown Duncan, he was the oldest of four children.

Dr. Duncan was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Maxine and father Paul; his youngest child, David James Duncan; sister, Judith Ann Young; his brother-in-law, Dr. Arthur Owen Kelly; and mother-in-law, Margarette Faye Groves Carter.

Dr. Duncan is survived by his wife, Roberta F. Groves Kehoe Duncan. Their life together began on July 3, 1981 at Christ Community Church with Pastor Scott Rawlings. Dr. Duncan is deeply mourned by his grieving family members. His children are Marianne "Happy" Berry Houston (Matthew) Forristall, of Homestead, Florida; Paul Gregory Duncan of Portsmouth, Ohio; and Dawn Elaine Duncan of Sacramento, California. His grandchildren are Hannah Jean Forristall Gainesville, Florida and Sam Houston Forristall, USNA Annapolis, Maryland. His step-children are Jennifer Leigh Kehoe of Cincinnati, Ohio and John "Jay" Groves Kehoe of Ironton, Ohio. His sister is Marilyn Kaye (Joseph) Brzuszek of Monroeville, Pennsylvania and brother, Dr. James H. (Deborah) Duncan of West Portsmouth, Ohio. His sister-in-law is Belinda (Thomas) Kelly of Franklin Furnace, Ohio. His nieces are Brooke and Lauren Duncan, Kristin Young Dyer, Kathy B. Sigler, Julie Brzuszek, and Andrea "Andi" (Kelly) Leasor. His nephews are Robert Duncan, Dr. Wayne Mathew Young, Joseph Brzuszek, and Arthur "Odie" Kelly.

Dr. Duncan was a 1953 graduate and star athlete at Glenwood High School. He financed his higher education by working at Empire-Detroit Steel, New Boston Coke Plant, and other jobs. He completed his undergraduate studies at Ohio University and graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University in 1959. He graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine on May 25, 1964 and undertook a Family Medicine Internship at Warren General Hospital through June 30, 1965. In 1965, he began his medical career. He practiced in West Virginia, Texas and Magnolia, Ohio before returning to the Portsmouth area. He was in private practice from 1980 through 1995 serving the Sciotoville, Minford, and Portsmouth communities. Beginning in 1995, he quit private practice and worked as a physician in Vanceburg, KY. On June 1, 2012, he retired from SOMC Vanceburg Family Practice.

When he was not providing medical care to those within his community, Dr. Duncan enjoyed spending time outdoors, playing tennis, and beautifying his home's landscape. When his children were young, he would often play ball with them, pass

either football or a baseball around. One of his favorite hobbies was horticulture. He also enjoyed spending time with his family; friends; and beloved dogs, Maya, Happy, Roscoe and Dixie. He terribly missed his dogs who preceded him in death (Pepper, Precious, Buddy, Ginger, and Haley).

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Elie Saab and his staff for the wonderful medical care they provided the past five years. The family would also like to thank the staff in the Progressive Care Unit at SOMC, Cornerstone Acute Care at St. Mary's Hospital, the staff and caregivers at SOMC Palliative Care, and Hospice Inpatient Center for the care they provided Dr. Duncan during his last days. Special thanks to his best buddies who saw to it that Paul needed for nothing during his illness, brother Dr. James Duncan, Ron Mullins, Bill Butcher, Roger Goddard, Dr. Frank Mynes, Dewey Griffith, Thom Hauck, and Cliff Adkins.

F.C. Daehler Mortuary handled arrangements for the cremation, memorial service, and burial. A celebration of Dr. Duncan's life was held in the Chapel at Christ Community Church on Friday, January 13, 2017, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Scott Rawlings, Paul's brother-in-law Dr. Wayne Young, and Ralph Clay officiating. Graveside service followed at Scioto Burial Park. The family and friends met for dinner at Mrs. Duncan's residence 134 Camp Street, Franklin Furnace.
