Allan Barrington Obituary

Allan E. "Big Al" Barrington

Spring Hill, FL - Allan E. "Big Al" Barrington, 81, formerly of Bow, NH, passed away July 18, 2024 in his favorite chair. Born in Orange, NJ to Frank and Ruth (Barone) Barrington, he played football and graduated from West Orange High School. He then served proudly in the United States Marine Corps from 1962 - 1966. Allan trained at Camp Lejeune, was a pistol and rifle expert, spending 2 ½ years on ship, returning stateside during the last year of enlistment to serve at Disciplinary Command in Portsmouth, NH.

The family settled in Bow, NH in 1974 where Allan was married to Maureen for over 30 years. He worked in the insurance industry, including several years alongside his sons. He coached football in Bow, Concord and Hooksett, NH and is still known as "Coach" to many. He enjoyed shooting pool, watching his sons games, spending time at Welch's Garage, and father/son camping trips.

Allan was a member of the Bow Men's club and loved to work on and collect cars. He was especially proud of his 1957 Buick, attending car shows all across the country and amassing trophies. Allan also was a volunteer firefighter, a Loss Control Engineer, Deputy Sherriff, and Safety Coordinator for NH Department of Transportation.

Allan spent considerable time trying to locate some of his Marine buddies, learning many had given their lives for our country. He dedicated his life to help preserve the memory, service and sacrifice of veterans. He served as State Commandant for the Gary S. Dillon Marine Corps League, rarely missing an opportunity to speak at veterans events. Traveling to Washington, DC, Allan found solace seeing the names of the fallen forever carved into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

He loved snowmobiling, boating, his beloved pets, and the Wounded Warrior Project. He attended many Super Bowls, desperately longing for his cherished NY Jets to repeat their glorious 1969 season. He wore his Jets sweatshirts and Yankees hat, mainly to annoy his sons, but would also sport Red Sox and Patriots gear. He loved old movies and music, especially Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and told stories of trips to Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.

Allan moved to Florida in 2015, surrounding himself with loyal friends. He found a home at Lee & Sons garage, talking shop and enjoying "Friday lunch", no matter what day of the week. He frequented many local establishments and wore t-shirts displaying USMC and his favorite places. He was fond of feeding Spring Hill cranes, made great spaghetti and meatballs, and perfected his famous limoncello recipe. Allan was a two-time cancer survivor who enjoyed a particular Southern Comfort Manhattan, his "5 o'clock" (no matter what time), and was smart, generous, stubborn, quick witted, living life on his own terms. His dry sense of humor, devilish grin and infectious catch phrase, "what's goin' on there boy", will be sorely missed.

Allan sadly leaves behind four sons, Mark (wife Jennifer), Michael, Matthew (wife Tonya), and Andrew (wife Shelly) Barrington, a sister Marilyn, along with many nieces and nephews, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Allan's final resting place will be at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH, with burial taking place on Friday August 23rd at 2:00 pm. A celebration of life will follow at Alan's restaurant in Boscawen. The Barrington family invites all to attend.

I mutual friend just told me of Al's passing. I am truly sorry for your loss. When he would call to make reservations for vacations, we enjoyed a lot of laughs and stories. It has been an honor to know him, and he will always have a special place in my heart.

To the Barrington Family,
I´m so very sorry to hear about Big Al. Your dad was a great guy, I loved waiting on him everyday at Champney´s Mkt. I was always grateful for his support and interest as I prepared for college. I know he helped with the Bow Rotary Scholarship award and was always grateful for his vote. He was a super nice guy and I know he will be sorely missed. Luckily he passed on some wonderful traits to his boys! Wishing you comfort and peace during this sad time,
Kelly (Butterfield) Lewis
