Benjamin Prescott Obituary

Benjamin J. Prescott

Concord, NH - Benjamin J. Prescott, a long time resident of the Concord area died Oct.13th at the Merrimack County Nursing Home. He was born July 29th 1938 to Benjamin Rodney Prescott and Diana Morrell Prescott.

Throughout his life he was a worker. He started at age 10 by caddying at Concord Country Club and quit at age 13 when they started letting girls caddy. From there he went to the Concord Monitor seeking a paper route. He was told to go find some customers and when he returned several days later with 29 new customers he became a paper boy and that lasted until he graduated from high school. He'd die all over again if he knew he was paying for this.

In that same interim he held many other jobs. He worked at the state Hospital kitchen, Brezner Tannery, Cota's Garage, as a bike repairman and a small time chicken farmer.

He graduated from Concord High School in 1956 and enrolled in the University of New Hampshire majoring in business. He graduated in 1960. The Navy and marriage followed.

He married Patricia Houghton, his best friend's sister. A happy and adventure filled life ensued. They had two sons, Brent David and Benjamin Scot. On leaving the Navy Ben and Pat returned to NH. Ben went to work for National Cash Register selling large computers to school districts and municipalities.

Wanting to stay in the Concord area Ben grabbed at the opportunity to purchase the long time sporting goods store, Haggetts. He and his sons worked on expanding it and opened a bike shop in Manchester. Getting ready for retirement he and his nephew, Wink Houghton Jr. built an beautiful home on the shore of Chebeague Island, ME. Later he purchased a condo on St Simons Island . All three locations provided wonderful golf opportunities.

Thanks to his early caddying experiences he had developed a good golf game and had a sweet swing. Concord country Club and its friendships were an important part of his life and he served on the board of directors and as treasurer. He did the same for the Great Chebeague Golf Club in Maine.

Ben was predeceased by his son Benjamin Scot and his twin sisters, Jane Morin and Jean Knowlton. He was also predeceased by his brother in law, Bob Morin. He is survived by his son Brent and his two grandsons, Benjamin Dylan Prescott and Benjamin Savage Prescott, many nieces and nephews and his loving wife of 62 years, Pat.

I smiled and chuckled at Ben's obit. I loved the stories about caddying and newspaper deliveries - I can picture Ben relating these experiences. What a kind, wonderful man, how fortunate that he was part of your life!

Good morning Pat,
You know from our phone conversation how sad I am about Ben´s passing, but I must tell you how his Obit in today´s Monitor brightened my day. It is so like the Ben I knew for so many years, starting from his wonderful boyhood employment record to his ambitious purchase of Haggetts and the building of your home on Chebeague. It embodies the wonderful man I knew - thanks for writing it for all to read!
In sympathy, Major

I have many fond memories of Uncle Ben. He was very kind to my siblings and I. He employed all of us at Haggetts at one time or another and even encouraged me to pursue accounting/business. My thoughts and prays are with you and your family.
