Carleton Auer Obituary

Carleton F. "Thumper" Auer

Henniker, NH - Carleton F. "Thumper" F. Auer, better known as Thumper, passed away on March 24th at his home in Henniker, NH.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Beulah Soule Auer and his father, Frederick M. Auer. Carleton was born in Burlington, VT. on March 13, 1943. He attended Hopkinton schools through eighth grade and graduated high school from Kimball Union Academy.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Due to poor eye sight he could not serve overseas, and instead was stationed in the Animal Institue of Pathology at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Upon completing his service in the army he attended and graduated from the Thomas School at the University of New Hampshire. Carleton worked for Fish and Game for over 30 years; first as a Biology Aid in the Game Division and later in the Fisheries Division. He enjoyed working as the Assistant Game Damage Adjuster and in the Salmon and Shad Restoration Program. After retiring from Fish and Game he worked for Banks Chevrolet. Carleton was a great story teller and loved family genealogy and history. His children fondly remember his devotion, support and presence at all of their sporting events.

Carleton is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sally Bailey Auer; his children, Sarah Elizabeth Auer and her partner, Alexander Hudak of St. Albans, VT.; William Frederick Auer and daughter in law, Molly Auer of Henniker, NH.; Alice Yen of Boston, MA; Susan Yen of Somersworth, NH.; and his grandchildren, Aiyana Auer, Theodore Diciantis, Adrian Rico and Silas Auer; as well as his sister Suzanne Walsh, her husband Dr. Alexander Walsh of Killingworth, CT. and their children, Dr. Jeanna Walsh and Lissa Walsh. Also all his nieces and nephews. Additionally, he is survived by Paska Yen and her daughters, who affectionately knew him as "Baba".

A service will be held at the Congregational Church of Henniker on April 15th, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Reception to follow at the Henniker Community Center.

Donation may be made in his name to the Henniker Rescue Squad 216 Maple St Hillsboro, NH 03244.

Thump used to visit often. We had 4 girls around his age but he was more like a brother than one we competed over. He even drove one or more of us to the city to visit our grandmother. She loved having him chaperone us to dinner and the theater. Thump was definitely the big brother I did not have! What a super guy! Barby Howe

Thump.....So many memories from the Hopkinton days. I don't remember but you used to push me in the baby carriage in Hopkinton. Many laughs and good stories from the many Thanksgivings we had with your family. Our parents were best friends. To Suzanne and Sandy.....what a wonderful person Thumper was. Love...Missy Arnold Field

Thumper was a loyal and best friend to Billy H. And although I only saw him a few times, his good humor and laugh will remain in my memory forever.

The Southern Auers are saddened by this news. We all loved Thumper´s enthusiasm for just about anything and fondly remember the get togethers initiated by Thumper and Sally. His cousin, Chuck Auer and spouse Helen treasured their times together and were so grateful for the continued contact and showing of love. I´ll always remember him in a gimmie cap with that great grin under the brim. My brother in Georgia, Charles Auer, his family, along with Mike and me will miss him and are just glad to have known him. With love and sympathy for such a sad loss, Margie Auer (in Florida)
