Carolyn Allen Obituary

Dr. Carolyn B. Allen, 87, passed away Feb. 24, 2016, after a long illness. Born Feb. 19, 1929, she was the daughter of Gerald E. Beane and Evelyn H. (Falvey) Beane of Henniker. The eldest of five children, she attended the Henniker Elementary School and graduated from high school in Kingston, N.Y., in 1947.

After graduation, Carolyn attended college and eventually graduated from New England College in 1951. While working at General Electric as an engineering assistant, she entered graduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and earned her doctor of philosophy in chemistry in 1961, becoming the first woman graduate of New England College to earn a Ph.D., and was the first NEC graduate to receive an honorary doctorate degree of science from the college.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Cobb of Keene and Connie Madler of Stuart, Fla., as well as two sisters-in-law, Doris E. Beane of Deering and Francis Beane of Holiday, Fla., as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brothers, Peter H. Beane and John C. Beane.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Hillsboro.

Interment will be in spring in Henniker New Cemetery in Henniker.
