Constance Mitchell Obituary

Constance Mitchell

Wolfeboro, NH - Constance Remington Mitchell, age 82, died on Sept 21, 2024 in Ossipee, NH. She was born on January 31, 1942 in New York City to Carol (Northrop) and Robert Dale Mitchell. After World War II, her family settled in Teaneck, New Jersey where she spent her childhood, graduating from Teaneck High School in 1960.

She entered the University of Michigan with a major in architecture, transferring in her junior year to the New School for Social Research in New York City, changing her major to sociology with the intention of pursuing a career in city planning. While in New York she married, and subsequently moved to Cambridge with her husband where she finally earned her BA from Harvard University in 1968.

Connie had a checkered professional career. After a number of years working as a draftsman in engineering and city planning firms, she separated from her husband and moved to the country in 1971, first in Vermont and later in Barnstead, New Hampshire where she had a small dairy goat farm. Living the country life necessitated finding small-town jobs that provided flexibility. She worked a variety of retail jobs; she worked in banking; publishing; horticulture; and tutoring. She was Town Clerk/Tax Collector for the Town of Barnstead in the 1980s, and for over 30 years she was a paralegal. She retired from farming and moved into the "big city" of Wolfeboro in 2016 where she worked seasonally at the Wright Museum of World War II.

In her free time, Connie took part in small town life as a Girl Scout leader; library trustee; planning board member; and election official. She was active in her church communities wherever she happened to live. Throughout her life she was an avid reader. She pursued her passions for history and archaeology, the built environment, and gardens (she loved to explore these through travel which she did as much as her means allowed). And people: in Wolfeboro, she met some of her favorite people while walking on the Cotton Valley rail trail.

Connie leaves behind a daughter, Nancy (and Kevin) Boyd of Waterford, Michigan, grandsons Douglas Boyd and Ryan Boyd, her brother Robert Mitchell of Stratham, New Hampshire, and nephew Andrew (and Crystal) Metric of Concord, New Hampshire.

A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Wolfeboro, in October or November of 2024.

I was truly grieved to read of Connie´s passing. After moving from my last address I was informed the new owners received the Christmas letter she sent but they failed to forward so I missed out. At that point I made a mental note to try to reach out. However, unexpected twists and turns led to 3 major moves in a year and a half and as I was looking online to confirm her address for my letter I read of her passing. I´m heartbroken! My deepest condolences to her family and to all who loved her for she was loved by so many. We first met Connie while house hunting and later ended up as neighbors when we moved to Barnstead. Always enjoyed the Christmas parties and garden talks as well as talking "old houses". I´m sure she would have been excited to hear we finally found an historic house to buy here in Maryland. We visited several times after her move to Wolfeboro and always enjoyed catching up and even kayaking together. She truly was a wonderful friend and I learned so much from her. I just feel so heartbroken to have missed one last conversation with her.

I was sad to read that Connie had passed. We had such a good time working together at Scott McGuffin´s Law Office years ago. She was so bright and so funny. I loved our conversations and bantering. She was a wonderful woman and amazed me with all she did. My heartfelt condolences to her family.I will always remember her. Rest in Peace Connie.

When I first moved to Barnstead I met Connie, While attempting to back a large long rented moving van up a hill with a turn in the path she tap on the hood of the truck and announced "This area of town is zoned as farm land and if my dogs bothered her goats she had the right to shoot them." I of course responded "lady if you shoot my dogs and I'll shoot you and then hi my name is John" from that moment on Connie and I were friends, she has been missed in the neighborhood since she move, she is at peace with Jesus, love and peace to her family.

Meeting Constance the day I moved to Barnstead was an experience, I shall never forget, as a new neighbor moving in across the street and trying to back a rented moving truck up a steep hill, She stop my efforts, to inform me that being in a farm zone she would have the right to 'shoot my dogs if they bothered her goats'. At which point I responded "Lady if you shoot my dogs I'll shoot you, Hi My name is John " at which point we became instant friends. Connie has been sorely missed in this neighborhood since she moved, she's with Jesus

We saw each other only once after I moved to Northern Virginia, and we talked only once a year, following my receipt of her Christmas letter. But I loved knowing she was a part of my world. I'll always be glad my earlier move to Barnstead had made that happen. There will never be anyone like Connie.

oh so many good memories of Connie in Barnstead...she helped me be "less shy"...one of my favorite neighbors back on Rand Road...the parties, the Women´s Fellowship, the dog walks, the retreats. She was so well-read and open-minded...we even talked science! I´ll miss her. My condolences to her family. She was a wonderful friend and neighbor.

Connie was my neighbor for over 30 years here in Barnstead, and she will be missed by everyone who knew her. We all have a lot of good memories with Connie. I remember taking care of her goats when she needed to be somewhere else, that was always fun. She was also a dog and cat lover, and she took care of any animal that may have shown up at her door. Many memories from the Christmas get-togethers in the neighborhood. To her family I am sorry for your loss, please know that she was loved by many, her place with Jesus is well deserved.
