Curtis Darling Obituary

Curtis Darling

Loudon, NH - Curt Darling of Loudon, NH, passed away of a sudden illness, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Boston, MA, on September 14, 2023 with his wife and family by his side. He was the son of Ralph C. Darling and Ruth Alger Darling, was born and raised in Taunton, MA, until moving to Concord at age 15.

Curt's legacy was that of love, commitment, service to others, and brought his wonderful sense of humor into many moments.

He graduated from Concord High School where he played varsity basketball. He attended Norwich University, and later attended and graduated from Keene State College.

Curt was a teacher in the Concord School District for 34 years where he taught 6th grade at Rumford School. He was known in the district for bringing his shih tzu into his classroom before bringing dogs to work was common. Curt was a hard worker. During the summers and after retirement as a teacher, he had his own house painting business for many years with many happy clients who appreciated his good work. Curt was also a real estate broker and worked for Caldwell Banker J Hampe Associates after retiring from teaching.

Curt loved sports. He was a dedicated Patriots fan. He was an avid alpine skier all his life. He played sports locally in the Men's Softball League, basketball, loved working out at the gym, and many long walks with his dogs.

Curt was a resident of Loudon, living on Clough Pond, for 43 years, with his wife Laura and beloved dogs. He was once dubbed "the best trout fisherman". If you were lucky, he would divulge his secret fishing spot location on Clough Pond. Curt cared deeply for the environment and volunteered in the NH State VLAP Program for 25 years, taking water samples from Clough Pond 3 times a year to be analyzed by DES. On April 25, 2023, Curt was awarded the Volunteer State Limnologist of the Year by DES for his dedication and volunteerism for the care and health of Cough Pond.

Curt was most grateful for the fellowship of AA and celebrated 40 years of sobriety in April of this year.

Curt believed and strived to live and share A Way Of Life that encompassed spirituality, physical and emotional health. He was committed to helping others with addiction, and, along with his AA fellows, started the first Big Book Step Study Group in Concord. Since, then this spiritual way of life has flourished among New Hampshire's AA fellowship.

In May 2020, Curt was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. He courageously took on the physical challenges of PD by a regimen of kickboxing, yoga, exercise and applying strategies learned in therapy.

Curt was a power of example to all who knew him earning respect from colleagues and students in his teaching career. Many will feel the loss of Curt's dedication toward helping others in recovery, and many who have been inspired by his perseverance.

Curt will be missed by many friends and family. Most of all, he is deeply missed as a loving husband.

Curt is predeceased by his parents, a brother, Dr. R. Clement Darling, II, a sister, Carm Darling Cherry.

Curt leaves behind his wife Laura, of 33 years. His loving family who were with him throughout this time; his brother, William Darling and wife Lyn, of Taunton, MA, his nephew, Dr. R. Clement Darling, III and wife Julie of Albany, NY, his nieces Cindy Darling-Fisher and husband Dan of Ann Arbor, MI, Wendy Darling Nickerson and husband Doug of Cataumet, MA, Elizabeth Darling of Royalston MA, He also leaves behind Susan Darling of San Francisco, CA, Amy Cherry Arbitol of The Hamptons, NY, and Will Cherry of Manchester, CT, sister Sally Seymour, of Concord, NH. and many great nieces and nephews.

Much love to McKinley Nickerson and Dr. Jeremy Darling (between work shifts) who spent many hours with Auntie Laura and Uncle Curt at BIDH.

A Celebration of Life will be on October 29, from 12 Noon to 3 pm at the Capitol Center for the Arts, Main St., Concord, NH.

My deepest, most heartfelt, sincerest condolences, to you Laura and to all yours and Curt's families and many friends.

I had the humble honor and blessing of sharing a few years of my youth with Curt.

I met Curt through my older brother and we just really hit it off probably because we were both always pretty happy souls without any apparent reason to be.

I have so many wonderful stories about our time spent together as I'm certain many other of Curt's friends and family have attested to here also.

Perhaps as it is with many childhood friends, as our childhood relationship moved into adulthood we slowly lost touch with one another but always remained close in our hearts.

We always tried to stay in touch with one another and whenever we would get the opportunity to chat we often reminisced about our boyhood days working together in the summertime on Dr. Blood's farm, which Curt's dad Ralph managed and Curt partly grew up on from the time his dad brought his family to East Concord to manage Dr. Bloods farm.

Curt was a beautiful, strong, athletic, gentle, good, kind, peaceful, loving, intelligent, considerate, passionate gracious, decent, thoughtful, helpful, harmless, selfless, very happy soul.

By all of Curt's stellar examples he will live on in my heart always, and I pray, in the hearts of each of those of us who had the best fortune to somehow come to share a moment of our journey here with him.

Rest in peace my gentle loving brother Curt. May your precious, loving light, continue to bring peace and comfort and a deep gratitude for the truly incredible gift of having met you, to all of those of us you so lovingly touched and beyond.

Only Peace
Only Love
Only Blessings

Namaste

Curt was a special Uncle who was there for me after my mother´s ( his sister´s ) illness and death 36 years ago. Curt had also been a role model in my own long term recovery years ago and an inspiration later on with my struggles to get back into recovery. He was an example of a life well-lived and his legacy lives on with all the people he has helped. Will Cherry

Mr. D was the most amazing teacher I ever had! 6th grade...what an adventure!
I have never forgotten the impact he had on me, using laughter and fun to teach his classroom. I always looked up to Mr. D and think about him often. When a teacher impacts you in a positive way, you don´t forget it.
Thank you for everything.

Of all the teachers I had throughout school, I can´t remember but one name, Mr. D 6th grade. My brother & I both had him. I can name all the kids in my 6th grade class photo. We were lucky. Condolences to his family.

Mr. D wasn´t just my 6th grade teacher. People who were lucky enough to attend Rumford Elementary School know that we were a big family. The teachers knew us and our families and we knew theirs. So losing Mr. D isn´t just losing some teacher you had. It is losing family! You will be missed more then you know Mr. D. RIP

I would not even know where to begin. Very few of my teachers made a life long impression on me and to this day, Mr. D and Mr. McKoan were my favorites of them all. I was part of the last class at Rumford Elementary School for 6th grade before they transferred the class to Rundlett and Mr. D made it the most memorable year. I saw him frequently as I got older around Concord and he always remembered exactly who I was and brought back so many fond memories. He will be greatly missed!!

Where do begin? I have some of my fondest memories of my youth ingrained as a pupil at Rumford school. Both Mr Darling and Mr McKoan were without question two really cool guys and I feel blessed to have had them for teachers and mentors. It seems like yesterday when Mr. D traded his red 1970 Camaro for his brand new blue1974 one which even as a child I was critical of and remember telling him it was a mistake....lol...May he always rest in peace and I extend my prayers and thoughts to his Family and friends and all those affected by his loss during this difficult time, Gods speed!

Other than my wife, Curt was my best friend. He was a very special man, and will be deeply missed. We had some crazy times together, both in school and after, some which were hilarious. He was like the brother I never had, and I often told him so. He loved his students, and they loved him in return. I can think of no higher compliment than to say, Curt was my friend. Tom McKoan

I had Mr. D in 6th grade at Rumford. Then later worked at Rumford for a year after college graduation. I remember him coming to my YMCA birthday party. He gave me ski goggles and markers. He used to call me Petunia. I always thought I would run into him in Loudon where my Mom later lived. Such a great teacher. His memory will live on.
