I knew Dan during our days at BC High but drifted apart after High School. I lived west of Boston and Dan lived in Somerville but we would occasionally get together on weekends focused on BC High school competitons. Even then Dan had the personality to be an outstanding teacher. I'm glad to see he pursued teaching as a career and that he was well esteemed by his students and peers.

Lighting a candle for one my absolute favorite teachers [1975 and 1976]. Besides being a wonderfully knowledgeable, patient, and effective teacher, Mr. O'Leary was also a mentor and muse to me. My heartfelt, soothing thoughts are for you and yours, Nancy.

Bernadette, I'm hoping you will drop me a line when you are able. I have lost your e-mail address and would like to keep in touch with you and your family. sherryATnewwwDOTcom will do it.

Oh Nancy...I was so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. In a world with so many challenges and so many not-nice people, it was a gift to trust my son to him - and to you. He was one of the "good guys". Someone so loved is never really "gone". My deepest sympathies for your loss.

So sad to hear about the suddne passing of one of my favorite high school teachers. Mr. Oleary was my Latin, Greek and English teach at KRHS. A wonderful teacher, kind, caring and genuinely interested in his students. Through literature he open my eyes to new wolds some full of struggles and others full of adventure. He and Wally Sanders inspried me to study other languagues which lead me to travel the world and lead a life neither I or anyone who knew me in high school would have expected. Thank you for teaching me so much!

A wonderful guy who I had the joy of getting to know through his nephew Ryan, one of my good friends. Sat on the Green Monster with Dan back in 2003 in a game when the Red Sox set a big league record by scoring 10 runs before making an out. He was truly tickled. Glad I got to reconnect with him briefly last summer. A great guy. Deepest condolences to all his friends and family.

Dan, you were a lover of language and learning, a scholar in the truest sense, a friend, the kindest of men, and an inspiration to so many people in so many walks of life. I am so heartbroken as I think about Dan, Nancy and the entire O'leary family. Dan and Nancy were the first people to make me feel welcome when I can to KRHS as a para so many years ago. Their ability to foster that sense of comfort and goodness is what I carry with me always. Soar with all the Angels Dan!

Dan was a delightful icon at KRHS and I always loved chatting with him about my son Joey at many parent-teacher conferences. We would frequently get off-Latin-topic and he would elaborate a bit about my son as a person, or sometimes about other unrelated topics. More recently, I have had the honor of getting to know his family a bit more, working with his amazing daughter, Bernadette. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. By all counts, Dan was a legend, and I know that he was adored and will be missed by many, many people.

My heart aches. It's amazing to think about how many lives he touched in a significant way; he was so much to so many: a second father to me. I will always remember him as a great listener and for his ability to unexpectedly make me laugh uncontrollably. Hugs.

If Webster had invented a dictionary of phrases rather than words..an the phrase define A Good Man was listed..the citation would read..see Dan OLeary. A Good Man..A Great Teacher..An example for all his students to aspire to become. I ran into him two weeks ago at the grocery store. He said Hi Carolyn and I smiled and said how are you Mr. OLeary? He said Carolyn its been almost 40 years since you were my student..you can call me Dan. I looked him in the eye and said No Sir..not going to happen ever..I have too much respect for you to ever presume that I could or would call you by your first name. Rest easy Sir..you taught so many of us about the importance of education and giving of oneself for the betterment of others and our community. I for one will miss you greatly..God Bless You

Hey Pal, my best friend, I know you're in heaven looking down on Albert and me. Forty years of amazing friendship! You were the brightest person I ever knew; quick witted, well read, a true scholar. Would not have been able to instruct Latin at St. Joe's if it hadn't been for you. We shared so much together. The Zucchini Brothers have so many memories. Hard work, lots of laughs and great whiffle ball games. One of the most important things in life is the friendships we make. Thank you for being like a brother. Alter ipse amicus!

Mr. O'Leary, my message to you where you now dwell: you are one of my favorite teachers and always will be! You inspired me in the two classes I had with you so many years ago. Steinbeck and Hemingway was most memorable. You brought depth into my world and made it a brighter place. Always so kind and positive. I think you were A LOT of people's favorite teacher. Thank you so much for all your hard work, consistency, your love of literature, and passing that on to me. I look forward to seeing you and your smile again one day.
