Martha Verville Obituary

Martha Verville

Concord, NH - Martha Verville Sheehy passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023 at the Hospice House in Concord, New Hampshire.

Martha was born on February 22, 1928 to William and Geradine Hefler. She grew up in Milton, Massachusetts with 4 brothers and 1 sister. She graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree that included many education courses. Her first teaching position was in Milton Mills, NH where she taught a combined class of grades 1 through 4. Her next teaching assignment took her to Goffstown, NH. She continued her education earning a masters degree in Education from Boston University.

In 1953 while teaching in Milton, NH she met and married her first husband, Bard Plummer. She and Bard were blessed with 3 children Bard, Nancy and Elizabeth. During her time in Milton Marnie, as she was affectionately known, was active in many organizations in the community including the Women's club and the Board of Trustees of Nute High School and Library. In 1963 with her children all in school at the urging of parents Martha started a kindergarten for the town. After 4 years Martha took a full-time teaching job at Milton Elementary School. The 1969 when the Milton Mills school reopened Martha taught first grade there until 1980. During the summer Martha enjoyed gardening, picking raspberries and spending days at the Milton Town Beach where she sometimes could be found lifeguarding.

In 1977 her husband Bard passed away and in 1980 Martha married William Verville and moved to Hopkinton, NH. She and Bill enjoyed a large vegetable garden and a Christmas Tree farm where customers could come and cut down there own Christmas trees. They also enjoyed time at their cottage on the 1st Connecticut Lake in Pittsburg, NH. While married to Bill grandchildren were added to the family, Twins Brittany and Caitlin Verville, Deidre LaCouture and twins Megan and Kristen Campbell.

Bill passed away in 1997. With Bill's passing Marnie started volunteering at the Hospice House in Concord, NH. She led grief classes at Hospice and continued to volunteer there for the next 25 years. Marnie found love for the 3rd time with John Sheehy. They married in 2007. She and John enjoyed many years of travel to various parts of the world. John joined her volunteering at Hospice and they enjoyed aqua aerobics at a nearby pool.

Martha will be remembered for her love of life, her adventurous spirit and the love, laughter and joy she brought to so many people. She never met a stranger and made friends throughout her journey on this earth. She indeed led life to its fullest. We all remember fondly the wild and crazy socks mom loved to wear with any and all outfits as well as her large collection of turtles. She leaves a wonderful legacy of love in the hearts of many.

Martha is survived by her husband, John Sheehy of Concord, NH, daughters Nancy Campbell of Lewisville, Tx and Elizabeth LaCouture of Lewiston, Me, granddaughters Brittany Verville of Newburyport, MA, Caitlin Wilkie of Dover, NH, Deidre LaCouture of Swanton, VT, Megan Tumblin of Denver, CO and Kristen Campbell of Carrollton, TX and numerous other family members. Marnie was such an amazing lady. She was fun, gregarious, thoughtful and so much more. I had the honor of first knowing her through water aerobic classes and the Friday lunches. I will always remember her singing in the pool when music wasn't available, her holiday costumes, fun socks, snazzy hats, homemade jelly and Christmas newsletters. We all loved her and she will be extremely missed. My deepest sympathies to the family, Mary Burbank.

I met Marnie at what is now known as the Health Club of Concord. We took water aerobics classes together. She was a warm and welcoming person always wearing a smile. Her holiday costumes were wonderful and her basket always full of treats. This all changed with Covid, and took a long time to recover from the pandemic. We all missed Marnie and the energy she brought to our gatherings. My condolences to John and the family. Mary King

R.I.P Marnie. She was one of the best neighbors and friendliest people you could ever met. I was fortunate to have her as a neighbor in Hopkinton for over 20 years growing up and again as an adult in Concord for almost a decade. I will always remember your socks for every occasion, candy canes at the Christmas tree farm and homemade popcorn balls for Halloween. You will be greatly missed.
