Morgan Patten Obituary

On Friday, November 8, 2019, Morgan Renee Patten, renowned "pretty big deal", was taken from the world at the age of 24.

Morgan was born in Lebanon, NH on October 1, 1995 (a glorious day by all accounts), to Steven and Renee (Duquette) Patten. She attended and graduated from Kearsarge Regional Schools, and earned a degree in Geoscience from Southern New Hampshire University. Morgan was accepted to, and enrolled in the Coastal Environmental Law program at Roger Williams University to begin in August 2020. She also had recently accepted a proposal of marriage from Phillip R. Brandon, Edgartown, MA.

From the age of three, Morgan was an insatiable reader, and loved to share her favorites. A multiple sport athlete, talented musician, passionate writer and self-proclaimed nerd, Morgan developed friendships across all social genres, and always felt drawn to those who were left out. Her hobbies included travelling, skiing, hiking, kayaking, tuna fishing, shooting, nature photography and running; her mission, to save the world. Morgan enjoyed the tranquility of Lake Solitude as much as a Broadway show; equally savored snowcapped peaks and flat seas, but would put all of her interests on hold if a friend were in need. Though we grieve the untimely and unjust loss of Morgan Patten, we are likewise sad for those who will never know her power and conviction.

In addition to her parents and fiance, Morgan is survived by her paternal grandparents, David and Grace Patten of Bradford, NH, maternal grandfather, Robert Duquette and his wife Joan of Sutton, NH. Several aunts and uncles, dozens of cousins and about a billion friends are mourning this tragedy as well.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Bradford Community Church, 88 West Main Street, Bradford, NH at 11 am on Saturday, November 30, 2019. A reception will immediately follow at the Appleseed Restaurant, 63 High Street, Bradford, NH.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the "Miles to Go" fund, c/o Steven and Renee Patten, at Bar Harbor Bank or Sugar River Savings Bank. This fund has been established to ensure that Morgan's voice will be heard loud and clear and her visions still realized in her absence.

I never was fortunate to meet Morgan, but I met her parents at a friend's wedding. Turns out that my late husband knew Steve very well. But because dave passed in July 2018, he never knew about Morgan's death and tragedy. I stand with Renee and Steve in their tribute to Morgan, clearly a beautiful, wonderful adventuresome soul. I will hold them and Morgan in my thoughts and prayers.

To the whole Patten family, my heartfelt sympathy in the loss of precious Morgan. I was suppose to meet her this past summer ( 2019 ) with my cousin Jon and oldest grandson, Brandon but it didn't happen . We were on Martha's Vineyard and couldn't find her and were later told she was on Edgartown. We did , however , find someone in one of the restaurant on Martha's that knew Morgan , retired couple from NY.I wrap my arms around you all in love and hugs.....It is better to light , just one little candle, than to stumble in the dark. Far better you light just one little candle, all you need is a tiny spark. If we all say a prayer that the world would be free, the wonderful dawn of a new day we'll see..... Morgan was related via marriage in the family...God Bless you all......love and hugs

I feel like I knew Morgan better than I did because of the way you both spoke of her. The pride you and Steve had for who she was becoming was so very beautiful. The pictures you have of her will always be with you as well as the memories. They are yours to treasure. My heart breaks with your loss and hope you find the strength to continue her legacy. I start this with saying I'm so sorry, I was the first one to her, I didn't know her , I had never seen her before and it saddens me there was nothing I could do to help her, her face stays in my mine wondering who she was ,what was she like, in my heart I just knew she was a good person. Now Morgan Patten I know your name and I see your beautiful face rest in peace. My heart goes out to your family and friends.

I remember Morgan so well from our mutual connection of several years ago. During that time, she was a regular visitor at our home. Also I am aware that she and you had a separate friendship with my daughter Holly through the Appleseed.
Although I did not know her as well as so many others, Morgan had a spirit that lit up the room as soon as she entered.
I like to think that that spirit is soaring high above us all now, surrounded by infinite love, reflecting it right back to her heartbroken parents here.
May you find peace, knowing that your beautiful daughter was loved by so many.

Quite simple to discern the reflective elucidations and declarations of greater enlightened minds through the enveloping darkness, is it not? For even in times of tremendous hopelessness, in the absence of the light of day does not the moon still shine? Does not the twinkle of stars still pierce our eyes? Does not our hearts continue to beat with a constant perpetual burning of passion and love? Of hope and sacrifice? Of appreciation and gratitude?

To The Family of Morgan Renee Patten,

On this morning and days upcoming, you are not alone. This will seem out-of-the-blue in many respects, but I felt that it would be appropriate, if not necessary for us to pay our respects to your daughter. Our names are Jordan Jeffrey Phelan and Sadie Jane Phelan, and we are graduates from Roger Williams University. While Sadie completes her PsyD in Clinical Psychology in southern New Hampshire, I, the more recent graduate, serve as the newly appointed Managing Editor at the Eagle Times in Claremont. Each day at the Eagle Times involves planning and coordination, but there are always moments when obituaries come in from around Sullivan County, reflecting the lives of community members who have lived in the city all their lives; those who left the city for a life somewhere else; and those who never knew the city existed, but once they discovered it they decided to stay. This is my second month on the job, and so far I have yet to read any of the obituaries that are printed in the paper. Until yesterday morning.

Draped down the right side of A3 was Morgan R. Patten looking right back, and something in the text quickly caught my eye.

"She attended and graduated from Kearsarge Regional Schools, and earned a degree in Geoscience from Southern New Hampshire University. Morgan was accepted to, and enrolled in the Coastal Environmental Law program at Roger Williams University to begin in August 2020. She also recently accepted a proposal of marriage."

It made my heart sad. There is a pain in my heart when I read it. As stated, Sadie & I are graduates of Roger Williams University, and strangely enough, I proposed to Sadie recently on October 27. Our lives seem so similar, and since it was the first obituary that I have read in my own paper I knew that it was for a reason other than coincidental.

I know I never knew you, Morgan, but I do know what an amazing opportunity lay ahead for you. What a tremendous school and community that was waiting to take you in. What a wonderful life yet to be lived. Roger Williams University would have been lucky to have you. It would have taught you, just as it has taught all of its students, to stand up for what you believe in; articulate your ideas in a firm, authoritative matter; and most importantly, change the world one moment, one situation, one topic at a time. It would have revealed to you that the presence of beauty in the world is the greatest proof of the existence of perfection, and that beauty is the courage to be who you are, pursuit to improve others lives to an equal or greater quality than your own, and creativity to try new things that may seem outlandish to both yourself and others. But, I believe that you already possess those qualities and beliefs. That is precisely why Roger Williams University chose you in the first place.

To the Patten family, your loss is felt by more than you know. Sadie & I wish to provide you with strength, love and anything else you may need at this time.

Morgan Renee Patten, I never knew you. But I wish others had the chance to.

I Felt An Angel
I felt an angel near today, though one I could not see
I felt an angel oh so close, sent to comfort me

I felt an angel's kiss, soft upon my cheek
And oh, without a single word of caring did it speak

I felt an angel's loving touch, soft upon my heart
And with that touch, I felt the pain and hurt within depart

I felt an angel's tepid tears, fall softly next to mine
And knew that as those tears did dry a new day would be mine

I felt an angel's silken wings enfold me with pure love
And felt a strength within me grow, a strength sent from above

I felt an angel oh so close, though one I could not see
I felt an angel near today, sent to comfort me.

This news is so very very sad. We knew Morgan for a short period of her life but she made our lives brighter. I must've asked her to come work at our restaurant a dozen times because I know she could do nothing but make it a better place. But she had great aspirations and of course I was so happy to hear that a young person who was so awesome had some really serious plans for her life.
She babysat for our kids once, and today I showed them a picture of her to make sure they remembered her and they both said her name out loud. I didn't want to tell them what happened because they are still babies but I was so happy that even after just one night together they remembered her because she was so very memorable. Our hearts are broken for you and your family and for anyone who may have met her in the future. We were so happy to see her engagement and just moving forward in life in such a wonderful way. Life can be so unfair sometimes and this is no doubt the definition of that.
Please except our heartfelt condolences for your loss.
