Peter Hutchins Obituary

MEREDITH - Peter F. Hutchins, Sr. of Meredith, died at his home Thursday, June 14, 2012 after living with cancer during the last two years. He was born in Winchester, Mass. April 4, 1949 to Mary Folsom Crocker of Laconia, and the late Emlen Tracy Hutchins. Peter was a graduate of Bates College and University of Maine Orono, and pursued doctoral studies at the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

Peter was a career educator whose talents and gifts were enjoyed by students and colleagues over 40 years in Maine and New Hampshire at the Old Town YMCA, Helen Hunt School, Herbert Gray School, University of Maine at Orono, Cornish Elementary School, SAU 6, SAU 43, Plymouth State University, and Plymouth Elementary School. Peter supplemented his career in public education by establishing the Kearsarge Pre-School and Kindergarten and also by serving as an educational consultant. During his 18 year tenure at Plymouth Elementary, Peter led the school to its recognitions as a United States Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and United States Distinguished Title I School. In addition to academic excellence, his educational philosophy included enriching lives with sports and the arts. Peter was a founding member of the Educational Theatre Collaborative, a program based at Plymouth State dedicated to integrating arts with area schools and community.

Peter is survived by his wife, Salina L. Millora of Meredith; and brothers, Richard K. Hutchins of Raleigh, N.C. and Claremont, and Winslow H. Crocker, Jr. of Brewster, Mass. Peter was a loving father to Scott D. Kull of Fort Worth, Texas, Sean R. Kull of Bangor, Maine, Kathryn L. Kull of New London, and Peter F. Hutchins, Jr. of New Hampton. He was a second parent to his daughters-in-law, Paola S. Kull and Chelsea S. Woodard and son-in-law, Brian J. Connolly, and a proud grandfather to Rebecca M. Kull, Kelsey S. Kull, Sydney L. Connolly, Casey S. G. Kull and Lucas K. Connolly.

Peter's guiding passions were family, dogs, sports and spending time at the camp on the lake in Meredith. He was dedicated to taking care of and spending time with those he loved in his personal and professional lives. For those whose lives he affected, we will carry him with us always.

Peter's life will be celebrated by a private ceremony.

Peter had many sterling qualities as a school administrator. He was a great listener. He was very good at pinpointing important issues. I especially admired his emphasis on making sure that kids had excellent male and female role models in the school environment. Rest well, Peter!

Meeting Peter and knowing him through his illness was extraordinary. I came to love his authenticity, his humor and knowing that he would never let me off the hook. I appreciated his open heart, his love of his family and his willingness to dive below the surface of things. It would be impossible to forget him. I only wish I'd known him longer. It didn't take long to recognize he was remarkable. Heartfelt sympathy to his wife, his mother, his siblings and his children. Be gentle with yourselves.

Working with Peter at Plymouth Elementary School was the highlight of my career. Being a Southerner lost in Yankee land was hard, but Peter made me welcome in the North. I will miss him. I wish sympathy to his family. My prayers are with you. I will never forget.

My condolences to all of the Hutchins family. All 3 of our children went through the Plymouth Elementary School while Peter Hutchins was the Principal. I drove a school bus and would talk with Peter almost on a daily basis. He was a fantastic administrator and friend to the Plymouth Community. He will be missed by many.

Mr. Hutchins was an amazing guy. He was great with kids and made us feel important. He listened when we needed it but could also keep us in line. He was what every pricipal should strive to be. I send my thoughts to his family in hopes that they find comfort at a time like this. It is hard to lose someone that close to you but with the battle he was having sometimes it can also be a comforting release. RIP Mr. Hutchins. You are now at peace.

As a parent Peter always took a moment to greet me. He knew both of my kids from kindergarten and made a point of talking to them when he saw them. As a member of our education community I had many great conversations with him regarding what we wanted our kids to know and experience. My favorite moment, when the SAU science committee wanted to have first graders plant apple seeds to which he replied...."I will be the only school with an apple orchard before they graduate" . However he still supported his teachers in environmental education and in developing the beautiful PES gardens (with a few apple trees planted by kids). Peter will be missed by the Plymouth community.

I remember the black lab who loved to fetch. And Peter, who looked beyond the everyday discussions, to those that were more in-depth and would offer more interest. Wish things were different. I offer prayers and well-wishes to the Family.

I will always remember Peter sitting patiently at the other end of the Raider gym as I worked with Pete with his jump shot. I remember Peter being very proud and supportive of Pete. I am sad for the whole family for your loss of a great guy. Peter took Pete to Concord for many years as Pete honed his basketball skills on the Concord Boys and Girls Club team and the Granite State Raiders. No sacrifice was too much for Pete.
