Richard Stuart Obituary

Richard Thompson Stuart, age 75, of Sandwich, NH died November 30, 2018 after complications from heart surgery. His zest for life and love for everyone he met will be missed. Born in Summerville, SC, Dick was the son of the late Burton Baldwin Stuart and Katherine Blakeslee Stuart.

He grew up in Lexington, MA, was educated at Lawrence University and received his D.Min. at Andover-Newton Theological School. He served as Associate Minister at United Church of Christ churches in Portsmouth, NH; Kogarah, Australia; and Laconia, NH. He also served as a counselor to many, both informally and formally as a school guidance counselor, pastoral counselor, and with Genesis Counseling Services. He and his loving wife Ruth were engaged in many peace and social justice issues.

He excelled in connecting people, including assisting with many support groups, including for PFLAG, vocal disorders, and Alzheimer's disease. This also involved serving and connecting people across the globe, through meaningful travel with Habitat for Humanity and other peace-building groups. He was also elected to the New Hampshire State House of Representatives.

Dick is survived by his wife Ruth Neubert Stuart of Sandwich, NH; his daughter Elizabeth Anne Stuart, son-in-law Brian Mark Doyle, and grandchildren Clara Stuart Doyle and Paul Stuart Doyle, all of Washington, DC; his sister Anne Stuart Galli of Portola Valley, CA; brother David Baldwin Stuart of Auburndale, MA; and many other loving family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association (https://www.dysphonia.org/donate.php), the Congregational Church of Laconia, UCC, Dorcas Fund (18 Veterans Square, Laconia, NH 03246), or to a social justice group of your choice. A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 1pm on Saturday December 29, 2018 at the Congregational Church of Laconia, UCC, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia, NH, 03246.

When i heard about Dick's passing - i found it hard to believe. He was such a vibrant, energetic, passionate, friendly, and warm human being. I met Dick and Ruth through the SD support group they initiated and organized twice/year, for many years, at the Lahey Clinic in MA, for people and their friends and family who were afflicted with the SD voice disorder. They arranged for for the space, the speakers, brought refreshments, and created a supportive community.

A politically active person, myself, Dick and i connected regarding the situation in Israel and Palestine and the NH Revolution walk across NH for campaign finance reform - to stop the corrupting influence of big money in politics. They invited me to stay in the beautiful home they created, which they also opened up to the NH Revolution walkers, with their characteristically welcoming, generous, hospitality. This world and so many people have been enriched through Dick's efforts and kindness, he will live on in all he has left behind. But what a sad and shocking loss. Dear Ruth - i'm so sorry. I hope and trust that you and your family will be OK. Meanwhile - i know if must be very hard. Best wishes, good woman.

Dick and my late husband, Bob Duncan, were college roommates at Lawrence COllege in APpleton, Wisconsin. Being laconically wry New Englanders drew them to each other in many ways. I still think of their friendship as strong, despite both of their passings. I also dearly loved Dick's sister Anne, who was at Lawrence, too. So I hope to get to the memorial service, weather permitting, to convey my deep regrets and sorrow in person.

Dick and I were classmates in college. Then and through out his life he represented the best in advocating peace, equality and justice for all. He represented goodness. I will miss his examples of what he did each day to make the world a better place for all.

Ruth and family: I am sadden to hear of Dick's passing. Whenever you two ushered at the CCANH, you two always had happy smiles and always helped out wherever it was needed. I wish you strength. Please remember to hold your memories of him close in our heart and he will always be with you.

My deepest sympathy to Ruth and family as you move through this time of loss. Dick was a strong presence in the NHCUCC during my years as a Conference Minister, and I have followed his passion for social justice and his living it out, via his and Ruth's postings in these ensuing years. Deo Gracias.

Dick was one of the most special people I have ever met. I met Dick, Ruth, and Liz through Miller and Ginny Lovett, all extraordinary people. I'm sure Miller made Dick feel welcome in Heaven. Those two are cut from the same cloth, and now there are two very special angels watching out for us. My condolences to you Ruth and Liz and your children.

Our absolute condolences for your and your family's sudden loss. I remember Dick as being very friendly and fun-loving. He always lit up the room that he was in with his smile and good humour.

Jean and I have known Dick and Ruth ever since he became our associate pastor here in Laconia. He has always been full of energy, very inviting and caring for everyone he came across. He reached out in many ways to all people of any faith and stature. He was generous and caring. We offer our condolences to Ruth, Pickle and all of the family. Dick will certainly be missed by us and many other folk.

Dear Ruth and Family,
We are so saddened by the death of Dick. He was so full of life and had that special talent to connect with people and draw them in. We have enjoyed so much traveling with both Dick and Ruth over the years. Our thoughts will be with you during the difficult days ahead and look forward to reconnecting with you Ruth later this year. Peace and love,

I am so saddened to hear of Dick's death. I can't imagine anyone so happy, friendly and alive as he was not alive. He was the one that got so many up on their feet whether it was dancing at Pitman's or the Multicultural Festival and up on the feet when they were down and out. He was a compassionate man as is his wife, Ruth. Ruth, you are strong and I know you will recover quickly but I know you will be very lost and sad without your best friend and husband. My deep concern and sympathy to you and your daughter and family. Dorothy
