Shirley Brown Obituary

CHICHESTER - Shirley A. Brown, 87, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the Epsom Care Center in Epsom.

Born June 16, 1926, in Winchester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Frank M.P. and Catherine (Wallace) MacConney. Upon moving to Chichester, she had worked at Pittsfield National Bank, the American Heart Association and Chubb Life Insurance Company.

She was predeceased by her husband, James M. Brown, U.S. Coast Guard, retired, in 1978; and her sister, Helen M. James of Saco, Maine.

In 1970, she was the first woman appointed and then elected as town clerk in Chichester, serving until 1974, retiring due to her husband's ill health.

She and her husband were among the founders of the Chichester Sno-Packers Snowmobile Club.

She was a member of the Board of Directors of the New Hampshire Kidney Foundation and volunteered and worked in their office.

In 1986, she was voted Business Woman of the Year by the Concord Coach Chapter of the American Business Women's Association of which she was a member and past president. She was also a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary 308 of Orleans, Mass. She was also an auxiliary member of the Retired Officers Association.

She is survived by several close friends who made it possible for her to stay in her own home, namely, Jon and Carol Harkness, Joan Florence, Carolee Davison and Fred and Donna Chagnon.

Calling hours will not be held.

Burial will be interment with her husband Friday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Chichester Rescue Squad, Main Street, Chichester, N.H. 03258, or to the CRVNA, P.O. Box 1757, Concord, N.H. 03301.

Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home of Penacook is in charge of arrangements.
