Spiro Anastos Obituary

Spiro A. Anastos

Portsmouth, NH — Spiro A. Anastos, 95, died peacefully at Portsmouth's Edgewood Centre on Thursday evening September 29, 2022.

Spiro was born July 3, 1927 in Newport, NH, to Anastasios and Olga Saggiotes Anastos. He was the youngest of 5 children, born to loving immigrant parents. Those parents instilled Spiro's strong faith and tremendous work ethic. A graduate of Towle High School, he put himself through college, earning a Bachelor of Science, in Business Administration, from UNH. He later received a Master of Education Degree from Northeastern University. He always worked hard to better himself. Growing from school teacher; school principal; school business administrator; assistant superintendent and human resource director. Upon retirement he was encouraged "to work for a couple of weeks" at Concord's busy Cat'n The Fiddle Restaurant as the Bookkeeper. Ironically, that 2 weeks, turned into 19 years.

He was married to Elaine Tagis Anastos for 50 years, at the time of her death, in 2008. He cared for her for 4 years at home, as she courageously battled cancer. They lived a life devoted to their faith and family. They were active members of Concord's Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Spiro served on the Parish Council; as Treasurer, Vice President and President. He was a recipient of the Diocese Laity Award. Since the early 1960's, Spiro and Elaine were summer residents in Rye. Over time they also joined the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

It was 9 years ago, Spiro permanently moved from Concord. He relocated to Portsmouth to live closer to his (like a daughter) niece Nancy Notis and her husband Ron Currier. Spiro and Elaine had no children, but always treated Nancy as their own. In Portsmouth, he was a faithful and generous Steward of Saint Nicholas and was again a recipient of the Diocese Laity Award. He enjoyed membership in: Bektash Temple Shrine, Order of AHEPA, NH Retired Educators Association, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity-UNH Alumi Association, Senior Friends, and Portsmouth's Senior Center. He loved: traveling, music, dancing, reading, going to Foxwoods, baking chocolate cakes and peanut butter cookies, Patriot's Football, and Portsmouth Rotary Christmas lunches, with Santa. He was a great card/letter writer, remembering friends near and far on special occasions. More than anything, he loved his wife Elaine. Uncle Spiro had a wonderful life.

Spiro was preceded in death by his wife, parents, siblings, and their spouses. He is survived by Nancy and Ron. Godson Tom Kallechey of Manchester. Sister-in-law Christine Boujoukos and her husband James, of Hampton. Several loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, to whom he was Uncle Pip. Loving extended family and dear friends.

Special thanks to Pat Ramsey and her devoted care givers at the Inn at Edgewood and at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Thanks too, to the angels of Beacon Hospice.

A time of visitation will be held at the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Thursday, October 6th from 10-11am. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM. The church is located on 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church/Capital Campaign. Private burial will be at a later date at Blossom Hill Cemetery, in Concord. For online condolences visit: www.jvwoodfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home—Buckminster Chapel.

We are sadden with the news of Spiro's passing. We grew up together in Newport, NH and had a close friendship. We enjoyed visiting him on our trips to NH from Florida. Because of the Covid Virus we could not travel. We will miss his wonderful stories and friendship. Our sincere sympathy and condolences to the family. My condolences to Nancy and others who knew Spiro. I have known Spiro and his family for a very long time. He was a wonderful man --kind, hardworking, high integrity and strong faith. I will always treasure our brief conversations and his smile. He lived a great life and may he now rest in peace.

In reading Spiro's wonderful life story, I was reminded that each year my past neighbor, Helen Buzcynski , Concord, NH, would receive a Wedding Anniversary card from Spiro, even several years after her husband Stanley passed away. Helen was one of many, as stated in obituary who was a recipient of his letter/card writing. I am sorry for your loss, may his memory live on from all the good he showed so many.
