Steven Winter Obituary

Steven J. Winter

Newbury, NH - Steven J. Winter, 84, of Newbury, NH, died peacefully with his wife at his side on July 15, 2023 at Woodcrest Village in New London after a brief illness. He was born on October 2, 1938 in Evanston, Illinois, the youngest of two sons of Oswald and Anne (Stordeur) Winter. He graduated from San Bernardino (CA) High School in 1956 and was a 1962 graduate of California State University, Los Angeles.

Surviving family members include Loa (nee Vanderhoek), his wife of 59 years; two sons, Mark Winter and his wife Meredeth of South Freeport, Maine, and Eric Winter of Saco, Maine; and four grandchildren, Maisie, William, Eleanor, and Asa. Mr. Winter was pre-deceased by his brother, Richard, and both of his parents.

Mr. Winter and his family moved to New London in 1979 and he was proud to call the Lake Sunapee region his home. He was a pilot for American Airlines for 31 years, retiring in 1998 as a Captain, flying international routes. He joined the Navy in 1962, flying during three tours in Vietnam before joining the Navy Reserve, retiring as a Commander.

Active in politics, he ran for NH governor as a Libertarian in 1994, worked for John McCain's 2000 campaign in both NH and South Carolina, and was twice elected to the NH House of Representatives. He was then unanimously elected two times as the Clerk and Chief Legislative Officer of the New Hampshire Senate. He also served as a Member of the NH State Republican Committee.

As a leader in the Allied Pilots Association, the pilot's union for American Airlines, he served as Vice Chairman, and later Acting Chairman of the San Francisco pilot base, and later chaired the union's National Policy and National Training Committees. His final position was as National Secretary-Treasurer of the Association.

Mr. Winter was a two-time treasurer and three-time Vestryman at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New London, vice president of the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Association of Parliamentarians, co-founder and President of the Hospice of the Kearsarge Valley, a member of the New London Rotary (Paul Harris Fellow) and the Kearsarge-Lake Sunapee Navy Birthday Committee. He formerly was a Director of the New London Outing Club, where he coached baseball and soccer.

Steve took great pride in the fact that he pitched in the 1951 Little League World Series, representing California, in Williamsport, PA, having the opportunity to meet legendary pitcher Cy Young. He also pitched in the 1952 and 1953 Pony League World Series for 13- and 14-year-olds. In 1958, he served as the California State Cadet Commander for the Civil Air Patrol.

An Anglican funeral service will be celebrated at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New London on Saturday, July 29th at 10:30 a.m. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Lake Sunapee Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) and Hospice – www.lakesunapeevna.org

Loa and Family:
I fondly remember Steve from our days in the New London Striders running club, back in the 1970's was it? I don't remember him running with us, but he did write our newsletter, copies of which I have saved for some odd reason.
Later I learned he became a quite the parliamentarian, and a resource for those involved in running public meetings. I regret now not having spoken with him about such matters.
He was a great man, friend, veteran, pilot, husband, father, and NH Senator. Quite a legacy.
My thoughts are with you at this time.

Our sympathies are with Loa and the rest of the family on Steve's passing. We knew him as a good neighbor but had never heard the story of Steve's being a Little League championship pitcher. That will bring an additional smile when we think of Steve with fond memories.
