Werner Horn Obituary

Werner Horn passed away on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at home with his family by his side after a lengthy illness.

Werner was born on Jan. 18, 1951, in Mannheim, Germany, the son of Werner P. Horn and Ursula (Feld) Horn. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marilee (Myers) Horn; his son, Werner D. Horn, and his wife, Molly (Garitta) Horn, of Franklin; and his son, Robert Horn and his wife, Melissa (McIntosh) Horn, of Penacook; two grandchildren, Penelope Jane Horn and Miles Robert Horn; as well as lifelong friends.

Werner moved to New York, N.Y., in 1954. He attended New York University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in geology. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army as a lieutenant serving in Germany for two years before going on reserve duty for another five years. His first son, Werner D., was born while living in Germany. Upon discharge from the Army, Werner and his family moved to West St. Paul, Minn., where his second son, Robert, was born. In 1984, he and the family moved to Bordentown, N.J., where he worked as a photo journalist. In 1990, the family moved to Franklin. An avid craftsman, he created many fun and original wooden toys that brought back a feeling of earlier times. His business transitioned in the late 1990s to creating beautiful wooden boxes, bowls and other wooden objects. On a trip to Germany in the early 2000s, he rediscovered his love for photography and he transitioned himself again, into a photographer.

Werner will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends for his generous nature, his storytelling, and his unique and irreplaceable sense of humor. He was voracious reader, loved taking portraits of his insect friends, had an interest in history and was a lifelong model-train enthusiast.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., at H.L. Young & Company Funeral Home, 175 S. Main St. in Franklin. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m., at the Congregational-Christian Church, 47 S. Main St., Franklin.

Interment will follow at Webster Place Cemetery, Franklin. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local Salvation Army in his memory.
