Bernard J. "Benny" Massara

AGE: 92 • Hammonton

Bernard J. "Benny" Massara age 92 of Hammonton, passed Monday March 11, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Ben was a 1938 graduate of Hammonton High School. He served one year in the U.S. Army and four years in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged as a 1st class radar man on the U.S.S. Collahan. Ben's favorite past times were gardening and riding his bike through the streets of Hammonton. He retired as a superintendent of the Hammonton Water Dept. after 38 years of service. Ben was notably honored with a lifetime achievement award from the South Jersey Water Professionals Assn. Ben was a life member of Hammonton Rescue Squad, (serving on the Executive Board for the past 12 years), and Hammonton Fire Co #1 for over 45 years being instrumental in many milestones achieved by both companies. He was the recipient of "Nice Going Award" from the Hammonton Chamber of Commerce; "Man of the Year" by the Kiwanis International Public Works; "Service Above Self Award" by the Rotary Club, and "Firefighter of the Year Award" in 1978. Ben served as a Hammonton Police Reservist in the 1950's, and was a member of St. Martin de Porres Church where he served as an usher.

Ben is predeceased by his wife Sue (nee DiLullo), parents Giacomo and Eleanor Massara and sister Nicolette Gazzara. Surviving are his children Ellie Maimone (Rocky Milano), Bernard (Mimi), James (Aggie) all of Hammonton and his sister Elizabeth "Betty" DeRico of Oaklyn. Loving grandfather of David and Darren Maimone, Jason Massara, Megan Scheer (Ryan), Lauren Goukler (Joe), Jacqueline and Susan Massara and great- grandfather of seven.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday eve. 6:00pm - 9:00pm and Saturday 9:30-11:00am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish - St. Martin de Porres Church S. Egg Harbor Rd. and Park Ave. Hammonton. Mass Saturday 11:00am at the Church. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery 124 S. First Rd. Hammonton, NJ.
