Dear Dennis,So sorry to hear of the loss of your son Greg and to read in the obituary that you lost your dear wife, Mary, as well. Our family lived in Cherry Hill and our son William, went to school with Greg. I remember at the Carusii graduation that Greg performed . He was amazingly talented then at that young age. I was a member of the Saint Pius X choir where you and Mary played and directed the choir. Gregory would often play at the Masses . My deepest condolences to you Dennis and your son Gary. Our deepest sympathy to Greg's family. It was our privilege to host Greg several times as he was a guest musician for the Dakota Sky Piano Festival. He was sincere and fun and delightful to host. He said he loved our piano because his mom taught him on the same kind. He sat with us as a beloved pet died in our arms for he lost several pets the winter before and knew our pain. He played songs for my daughter to sing, His energy and love for performing and teaching was palpable. Greg provided hours of great music in our home as he prepared his performances. He will be in our hearts forever. Our sincerest sympathy to those who knew Greg and love him.

Greg was a wonderful collaborator and musician. I was lucky to know and perform with him when we were both students in New York and it is sad for the world to lose such a brilliant artist. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Greg's passing, and I offer my deepest condolences.

Greg was my Juilliard Teaching Assistant from 2005-2006, and was just superlative in every way. I was also fortunate to work with him as a coach when he was in Ensemble ACJW, and I had the thrill of arranging for him for his Kids Concerts at Carnegie Hall and Suntory Hall.

I thought that you might appreciate the recommendation letter that I wrote for Greg when he applied for his University of Pennsylvania position. I still stand by the words; Greg was a one-of-a-kind gift to the world:

"I am writing to recommend Gregory DeTurck for the position of Music Lecturer specializing in performance and theory. Greg was my Teaching Assistant for Literature and Materials of Music for one full year at the Juilliard School, as well as a student of mine in The Academy: A Program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute.

Quite simply, it is difficult to imagine a candidate better suited to the needs of your school. As a pianist and musician, Greg has repeatedly proven himself to be one of the strongest talents of his generation, and I believe that his stature and career as an artist will only continue to grow. What he brings to University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences as a performer and teacher will greatly enrich the community and inspire students and faculty alike.

As a teacher, Greg was by far one of my most capable Teaching Assistants in my ten years of teaching the course, and I have no doubt about his ability to be an effective and compassionate teacher in the classroom. His responsibilities included leading theory and ear-training activities, helping students with composition projects, performing, and lecturing on music literature from the eighteenth century to the present.

In the Academy, Greg was impressive in his abilities in outreach. Greg is not only effective in teaching college students, but he can also effectively share music with young audiences, or audiences without extensive musical backgrounds or knowledge. I am fully convinced that Greg can be an impactful teacher and performer in any situation and that he can offer the University of Pennsylvania many ways to engage the campus and outside communities.

If you have any questions, please to not hesitate to contact me.

Dr. David Wallace"

Dennis and Gary,

I am deeply saddened to hear that Greg passed away. He seemed to always have the ready smile and happy demeanor of you DeTurck's; what we will always remember are those times he treated us to his piano magic. Whether it was in elementary school, Junior High or at West, he brought the joy of music to us all. For all the Wards, our sympathy and condolences to you.

I am so very, very sorry to hear of the loss of Greg... I knew him as a fellow student at Eastman, and my memory of him is of a very gentle, softspoken young man who would smile kindly at you even if he didn't know you well. He impressed me as courteous, thoughtful, and of course, talented - very devoted to his music. My heart goes out to his family and friends, as he'll no doubt be dearly missed.

As a piano colleague of Greg's, I am heartbroken. He made such an impact with his genuine musicianship, and the feeling of losing a wonderfully warm, intelligent, fun, and inspiring human being will continue to resonate throughout the musical community.
