Samuel Griscom Obituary

Samuel Thorne Griscom

AGE: 85 • Jupiter, FL

Samuel Griscom died November 13, 2015 in Jupiter, FL where he was living with Lynn, his beloved wife of 33 years. They loved their home in FL where they spent many hours overlooking the water from their balcony. Sam is survived by his wife Lynn Small Griscom, his daughters Julie Griscom (Ray McGraw) and Kathy Cundiff (David), his step children David Smitheman (Lynda), Paul Smitheman (Debra) and Janet Detore, his nine grandchildren Zachary, Patrick, Kelly, Samantha, Jacob, Katelyn, Peter, Ryan and Courtney and his brother Thorne. He is pre-deceased by his brother Richard, his niece Elisabeth Morrison, and his former wife Joan Buch Griscom.

Sam was born March 26, 1930 and was raised on a farm in Marlton, NJ. His Quaker upbringing was important to him and he lived his life accordingly. Sam graduated from Haddonfield High School and Swarthmore College. After college, Sam returned home to manage the family-owned Cropwell Farms until his retirement in 1985. Sam was dedicated to community service and became involved in local politics in the 1960's. He served as a Councilman in Cherry Hill Township and was a member of the Cherry Hill Rotary Club for over 50 years. He was a member of Tavistock Country Club. Sam and Lynn loved traveling, and did so extensively. One of his great pleasures was working at his desk Saturday afternoons listening to live opera from the Met. For many years he wrote a weekly letter to all of his family. He loved lively discussion about current events and controversial topics. He faithfully read the local paper and the Wall Street Journal every day throughout his life. Sam will be remembered for his sense of humor, his generosity, his love of family, and his unique outlook on life. His family and his many friends in FL and NJ will all miss him dearly.

A private service for the family is planned at the Cropwell Friends Meeting House in Marlton, NJ. Donations may be made to Cropwell Friends Meeting House, 802 South Cropwell Road, Marlton, NJ 08053

This is such a charming remembrance of Sam. I remember the fresh peaches with vanilla ice cream every night they were in season, and his love for Harry Bellafonte. A kind generous man - even if he was a republican ;-)

It is with deep sadness that I write with heartfelt sympathy and condolences as you mourn the loss of Sam. The years pass too quickly and it is hard to believe he has passed. May all take comfort in the special memories of his life with you and how he gave generously to so many over the years by sharing his time with visits to others who were part of his life from childhood on. He never forgot and neither will those who carry special memories of him in our hearts. He was a blessing to so many and shared his talents over his lifetime in meaningful ways. He will be missed but remembered always.

I am sorry to see that Sam has passed. He was a great man and a very good councilman for Cherry Hill. He was a good representative of the Republican party in Cherry Hill. To Julie and Kathy, I offer my heartfelt personal condolences and as Chairman of the Cherry Hill Republican Organization, the gratitude of the party for his many years service to the Township of Cherry Hill.
