Jack Benjamin Obituary

Jack Allen Benjamin

Evansville, IN

Jack Allen Benjamin, 85, was called to his heavenly home on Thursday, March 15, 2018. He was born October 27, 1932, in Winslow, IN, to the late Raymond and Mabel Benjamin. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1951, Oakland City College in 1954, and received a Master's Degree from Indiana University. The most significant date in his life was August 20, 1954, the day he married the love of his life, Betty Joan Smith who preceded him in death on November 13, 2017. They were together for 67 years. Together they had 2 daughters Leesa and LuAnn. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, educator, and friend.

Evansville has been home since 1959 when Jack started teaching and retired after 35 years at Bosse High School. He had a significant influence on many generations of students, faculty, and staff. After retirement he became a "professional volunteer". His primary volunteer position was with the Hadi Shrine Hospital Staff. He drove over 100 trips to take children to Shrines Hospitals in the Midwest.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. Jack was a charter member of American Baptist East, former member of East Side Baptist, member of the Winslow Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Hadi Shrine. He was the past president of the Evansville Retired Teachers Association and the outstanding Math Teacher of the Winslow High School Alumni Association. He lived his life as fully as he could while maintaining his servant heart.

He is survived by his daughters, Leesa Benjamin (Gary Gates) of Evansville, IN and LuAnn Licari of Sunrise, FL; brother Don (Irene) Benjamin; sister Patricia Howson; grandchildren, Gregory Gates, Kathryn Madary (Matthew), and Brad Gates (Theresa); great-grandchildren, Owen Gates, Asher Gates, Hugo Gates, and Jasmine Madary; and many loved sister in laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at American Baptist East Church, 6300 Washington Avenue, Evansville, Indiana. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Petersburg, IN, with Pastor Frank Coleman officiating.

Friends may visit from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2018 at Boone Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville, IN. A Hadi Shrine walk through, and Hadi Hospital Staff walk through will occur at 6:30.

Had Mr Benjamin's impact been confined to math and chemistry classes, he would have had only a minor impact on my life. But it was not. He taught me what we call life lessons: integrity, initiative, compassion, candor, personal pride. And much more. He was a teacher in the largest sense of the word. I will never forget him, the contribution he made to my life, and will remain forever in his debt.
