Joseph Duckworth Obituary

Joseph A. Duckworth, Jr.
Evansville, IN
Joseph A. Duckworth, Jr. "Papa Joe", 85, of Evansville passed away at 11:30 pm, Thursday, September 15, 2011 at home.
Joe was born March 6, 1926 in Poseyville, Indiana, the son of Joseph, Sr. and Agnes (Blesch) Duckworth. He attended Bosse High School and left to join the United States Navy during WWII where he was ultimately assigned to LST 480. Joe was dispatched to Pearl Harbor and served as a Signalman along with his twin brother, John. LST 480 was attacked and sunk, where he was one of only a few to survive.
He returned to Evansville where he eventually met his wife, Louise. As he would say they remained "still married" for 56 years.
Joe worked many years in the trucking industry for several trucking companies including Pride Brothers Towing Service, and Meisler, Schneipper and A&H Truck Lines. Joe was a lifelong member of Teamsters Local 215, American Legion Post #1114 and D.A.V.
He enjoyed a very close relationship with his wonderful neighbors, including the River City Postmen, Lucille and Jim Baker, Hal and Delores Wolford, Patty and Mark Hartman and Lyman, Bonnie and Vickie Winemiller.
Joe was a member of American Baptist East/LifeLifters. He was the official LifeLifter greeter and greeted members with an open door and sweet treats.
Joe had 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren who lovingly remember him as their Papa Joe. He loved to spoil them with Freezie Pops, candy, cookies and his favorite Little Debbie cakes.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Hardesty and staff, Dr. Mark Browning and staff, VA Clinic and staff, St. Mary's Home Healthcare and VNA Hospice, especially John Collins.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Louise (Leach) Duckworth of Evansville, daughters, Robin Duckworth, Charlotte Mellott and Sandra Yeager (Robert), all of Evansville, sons, Mike Duckworth, Sr. (Traci), Jerry Duckworth (Pat) and Jim Warren, all of Evansville and Rick Warren (Karen) of Carmel, IN, 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, nieces, Gail Pruitt (Ben) and Sue Guier (David) and sister-in-law, Peggy Duckworth.
He is preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Duckworth in 1975 and his twin brother, John Duckworth in 2004.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Monday, September 19, 2011at American Baptist East Church, 6300 Washington Avenue, Evansville with Pastor Jeff Stratton officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans will perform full military rites.
Friends may call from 2 pm until 8 pm, Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Boone Funeral Home - East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville and again from 11 am until time of service at 1 pm, Monday at American Baptist East Church.

Joe Duckworth was one of the kindest, most generous and also most stubborn man I have ever known. He and my Dad were like two peas in a pod. I've seen then both leave their front doors and both be mumbling under their breaths fussing at one other before they ever met in the middle of the boulevard. When Dad and Mom were both gravely ill Joe and Lou and Mark and Patty never forgot them and were such a comfort to me during such a difficult time. That is a debt I can never repay. My heart goes out to all of you as I share your loss of such a good man. I would give anything to open my front door and have Joe meet me in the boulevard mumbling at me for not wearing shoes and trying to herd me into the house so he and Lou could feed me. God Bless and keep you Joe Duckworth. Vickie Winemiller Marklin

He was everyone's "Papa Joe" ! If you knew him, you loved him. I don't how that great big heart got into that small body, but he used it to the benefit of all who needed anything. His life and love and humor will always be remembered. Our love and prayers to all " The Ducks" Gary & Tina
