Mark Conway Obituary

Dr. Mark Francis Conway

Evansville, IN

Dr. Mark Francis Conway, 62, passed away from AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation) May 8, 2018, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana with his family by his side. He was born May 10, 1955 to Mary Jo and Thomas Conway.

Survivors include his wife Margaret (formerly Foli), two sons, Jeffrey of Seattle, WA, and David (Tana) of Tucson, AZ; four brothers, Patrick (Carol) of Chapel Hill, NC, Daniel (Claire) of College Station, TX, Timothy (Karen) of Newburyport, MA, Mike of Bloomington, IN. Several nieces and nephews also survive, who loved their Uncle Mark so much.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Kathleen.

Mark was born in Cincinnati and grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University and the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he graduated in the top ten percent of his medical school class. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He specialized in Family Practice and was a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. Mark was also honored as a Kentucky Colonel.

After completing his residency at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Mark practiced medicine for four years in Greencastle, IN. In 1988, the family moved to Evansville for his work at Welborn Clinic, now Deaconess Clinic, where he practiced for 30 years. Mark loved his family, his colleagues and his patients and was very much loved by them. He was devoted to and cared for his elderly father who passed away in October 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Mark believed in helping others and volunteered his skills on mission trips to Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, Haiti and New Orleans, in addition to working at a clinic for the poor on Hilton Head Island. He also served on the board of ECHO Health Care in its early years.

He enjoyed physical activity and took excellent care of himself. This enabled him to donate his organs, corneas, and skin to those in need. We believe that Mark would have been very pleased that his final act was helping others through medicine.

Mark's family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Neil Troffkin, Dr. David Eggers and the nurses in the Neuro ICU, specifically, Carrie, Christina, Hannah, and Nora. Mark was given exceptional care and these individuals were wonderful to his family during a difficult time. We are so grateful to them.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 13, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron, Evansville from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by Father Bernie Etienne, pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, Mark's family requests that donations be made to the Conway Family Scholarship at the Vanderburgh Community Foundation, 401 SE 6th St, Evansville, IN 47708 (https://communityfoundation.wufoo.com/forms/gifts-to-the-vanderburgh-community-foundation/) or the Alzheimer's Association, 701 N Weinbach Ave #510, Evansville, IN 47711 (https://support.brightfocus.org/default.aspx?tsid=9987&isTribute=1&msclkid=e8c1651cc394138c5adf3fe8acf21f93&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Alzheimer's%20Disease&utm_term=alzheimer's%20association&utm_content=Alzheimer's%20Research%20(Broad%20Match)).

Mark was and continues to be one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I will always remember the time he cheerfully greeted my sister and me with a plate of sugar cookies with rainbow sprinkles. He will forever be my role model and losing him was like taking some of the light out of life. As his niece, I miss him terribly, but as a citizen of the world, I celebrate his altruism and his dedication to saving lives.

Mark was and continues to be one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. One of my most treasured memories is a time when my sister and I visited Mark and Margaret and he cheerfully greeted us with a plate of sugar cookies with rainbow sprinkles. He will forever be my role model and life seems a little less bright without him. As his niece, I miss him terribly, but as a citizen of the world, I celebrate his altruistic acts and his dedication to saving lives.

Dr. Conway way our family doctor from 1995 (after I'd had heart surgery) until 2013, when he advised us to locate with an eastside doctor since my wife was requiring a dementia facility on that side of town. Turned out she went to Atria's Memory Unit when his father was there; so I got to see him there. Dr. Conway was so fine! So caring! Always wise for us. Always had enough time for us. I got to see him a month ago when he was at Gateway East, both of us in for appointments. Great to talk to him that day briefly. So glad to see, from the obit, how extensively he was involved in 3rd World medical mission trips. I'd loved to have talked with him about all that. My wife is gone a year and a half now. Loving greetings to Theresa his nurse, and to you, his family.

I'm completely stunned and heartbroken ..... Mark has been my doctor for many years. He was so caring, upbeat, personable, very knowledgeable ... always took time to provide the greatest advice and personal attention. This is difficult to comprehend because I just saw him for an appointment a couple of months ago and had no clue anything was wrong. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. As much as I mourn his loss, I can't imagine the heartache the family and staff are feeling. What a huge loss for so many people. Mark was truly a blessing to my life.

I've had many doctors over the years, and I can say that he was the kindest and most compassionate one. Even when listening to a patient describe their problems, he would write down notes without looking down at the paper. That may sound silly, but that's the type of care he took to listen and understand what a patient was describing. He was taken too soon, that much is certain, and I will miss him deeply, even if only as a patient.
