DEFIANCE - Lettie Jean (Parker) Hale, 93, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2023, at Kingsbury Place Assisted Living, Defiance, surrounded by her loving family.
Lettie was born in Napoleon, Ohio, on May 16, 1930, to the late Frederick E. Parker and Josephine E. (Parker) Dolan. On July 1, 1950, she married Eugene C. Hale.
Lettie attended Defiance High School where she was a drum majorette and was crowned Homecoming queen senior year. During her high school years Lettie was actively involved in band, choir, social problems, art and journalism. Lettie went on to attend Bowling Green State University where she was a member of Alpha Zeta Beta sorority. She was active in her local alumnae club and enjoyed annual reunions with the sorority sisters.
Upon her return from college, she married her high school sweetheart and became a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Lettie was a life-long member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was an active volunteer in her church community. She received volunteer recognition for the Council of Catholic Women/Diocese of Toledo for service to the parish community and also volunteer of the year award from Young Men's Christian Association. Lettie also loved using her design expertise assisting clients at Personal Touch Drapery, Family Touch and Stambaugh Jewelry. She enjoyed designing her own greeting cards and custom jewelry to the delight of family and friends. Lettie was an avid reader and belonged to several book clubs over the years. She was also a member of the Current Events Club.
Gene and Lettie enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends around the United States, Alaska, Belgium and Acapulco to name a few.
Lettie will be sadly missed by her loving children, Rebecca (Dennis) Erford of Defiance, Barbara Hale of St. Petersburg, Florida, Steven Hale of Branford, Connecticut, beloved grandchildren, Devon (Steve) Johnson of Defiance, Abbey (John) McClain of Columbus, Ohio, Alissa (Tim) Nolan of Lewis Center, Ohio, Adam Erford, Madison Heights, Michigan, Griffin Jones of New York City, McKenna Jones of Arlington, Virginia, Madison Hale of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Kason Hale of St. Petersburg, Florida, and great-grandchildren, Jayden Stone, Dylan Johnson, Owen and Matthew Nolan, Madeline and Ellie McClain. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Jack Hale and sister in-law, Judy (Hale) Stancil, as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
Lettie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene C., her son, Michael Charles Hale and many family members.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 11, from 5-7 p.m. at Schaffer Funeral Home located at 527 Jefferson Ave. Services for Lettie will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 12, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance. Burial services will follow the at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.
