Michael Struble Obituary

Defiance - Former Defiance City Schools superintendent, Michael Richard Struble, 70, Defiance, Ohio, passed away on February 10, 2021, after a short battle with leukemia. A memorial service will be held in Defiance at a later date, which will be publicly communicated.

Mike was born in Napoleon, Ohio, on February 7, 1951. He graduated from Defiance High School in 1969 and continued his education at Miami University graduating in 1973. He later earned a master's degree from Ohio University in 1979. He worked in education for 46 years as a teacher, coach, athletic director, principal, and superintendent.

Mike served Defiance City Schools from 2006-19 before retiring. He was the driving force in the completion of two major building projects and numerous other district facility upgrades. His passion for outstanding facilities for the community of Defiance will be his legacy for decades to come. Working for Defiance City Schools was one of the great joys of his life.

Mike married Amy (Reeves) Struble on September 11, 1971. They were married for 49 years. The couple had two children together, Michelle and Matthew.

He is survived by his wife, Amy (Reeves) Struble; children, Michelle (David) Bailey and Matthew (Meg) Struble; siblings, Cindy (Steve) Neal and Steve Struble; grandchildren, Zachary Bailey, Lauren Bailey, Grace Struble and Baby Girl Struble, due in April 2021; and his beloved bulldog, Tilly.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Struble and Jane (Christy) Struble; and his sister, Teri (Dennie) Westrick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Defiance High School Athletics and/or the First Presbyterian Church in Defiance, Ohio.

It has been said, “In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something else.” Well, Mike Struble was the best. On the outside he could be intimidating, but on the inside Mike was an educator who truly loved his students and just wanted the best for them and their families. I look back with appreciation the times I would just wander into his office (or get called into it!) and talk about sports or just stuff. He had a way of instilling confidence in people, probably a big reason I chose to go from small school Edon to massive school Ohio State. Mike, you will be missed.

I was a brief student at Edon when Mr. Strumble was Superintendent. He was always so kind and supportive to me in light of my troubled life. Later in life in 2003 when my boys were killed in a car crash he allowed us to have a ceremony and place a memorial rock at the elementary play ground at the new school. Very greatful to have known him . Many prayers of peace and comfort to his family.

I had many interactions with Mike during his years at Edon. He earned my respect as he in my view point, was the enforcer but always had the kids and family’s interest at heart. I am so blessed to call him friend and so saddened at his untimely passing. Sending prayers and hugs to the family and may you Rest In Peace, Mr. Struble...

Such a wonderful man. I hadn't seen him for 50 years, but at our high school reunion, it was amazing to see what he had accomplished in his lifetime. He gave a small group of us a tour of the new high school, and the one we graduated from in 1969. I'm so happy I took the time to drive out there that morning. Just an amazing lifetime. Bless you Amy.

I remember Michael from high school. Even though I didn't graduate with my class Mike searched me out at the mixer and made me feel so welcome. My heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones.
