Anne Kamens Obituary

Anne Kamens
Anne Gelfand Kamens passed away on December 11, 2017 at the age of 91, after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost 65 years, Dr. Edward Albert Kamens. Annie was born a daughter of the late Aaron and Rose Anton Gelfand. Her uncle and aunt Dr. Joseph and Thelma Anton predeceased her, as did her brothers, Gabriel and Sidney Gelfand, and her son-in-law Sandy Ross. She leaves behind her two daughters, Gilbey Kamens Campbell and Ruth Kamens Ross, and her son-in-law Brian Campbell. She is also being mourned by her sister-in-law Shirley Gelfand. Missing "Chief Black Socks" are her nephews Ross and Kurt Gelfand, and her niece Elise Gelfand Lestz, and their respective families, along with many extended family and friends.
Annie was born and bred in Bridgeport and never strayed very far for long. She graduated from Central High School and the University of Connecticut in Storrs. While Doc finished his medical training, Annie worked as a social worker, taking "early retirement" upon the birth of their oldest daughter. They settled in Fairfield, CT to raise their family where Annie was very involved in local politics. Eventually they relocated back to Bridgeport for their golden years. Annie was an avid golfer, tennis and bridge player and fan of the UConn Women's basketball team. She never met a bowl of ice cream or chocolate treat that she didn't enjoy. She also loved an afternoon of retail therapy at Loehmann's or Bloomingdales, listening to Frank Sinatra, an occasional glass of champagne and the color blue. No one could sing a chorus of Dayenu with any more gusto than Annie. But more than anything else, "Annie Bananie" loved her family and friends.
A service to celebrate Anne's life will be held on Thursday, December 14 at the Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road in Fairfield, CT at 11 a.m. Gilbey and Ruth will receive friends one hour before the service. Interment will follow at the Congregation B'nai Israel Cemetery on Kings Highway in Fairfield, CT. The family would like everyone to join them in the reception room of The Inwood, 3200 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, CT following the services for a reception honoring Annie.
The family would like to thank Annie's caretaker Taylor who made it possible to keep her in Bridgeport for as long as we did. We are also very grateful to the caring staff of Parkside Assisted Living Facility in Richmond, VA for keeping Doc and Annie together and who, along with Ascend Hospice, kept her comfortable until the very end.

Love and care to you. Your mother and father were special to me, and there was always a special bond between them and my parents, my sister, and me. Technically, I guess that they were "extended family," but they seemed very close to me. Our condolences on the loss of this warm and fine woman. Emil Frankel

My thoughts go out to you, Gilby and Ruth, at the passing of your mother. She was a wonderful, loyal friend of my parents and especially my mother after my father passed away over 20 years ago. She was a warm, funny person, I enjoyed her sense of humor! My mother and our family are very sad to have lost such a great person. She will always be in my memory.
