SCHALLER Charles Ridings Schaller, 76, husband of Susan MacQuarrie Schaller, of Okatie, SC, died Monday, March 5, 2012 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held March 31, 2012 at Spring Island and at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church in Fairfield, CT in the summer. Mr. Schaller was born on January 20, 1936 in Philadephia, PA. He is the son of the late Robert Thomas Schaller and Jean Sowden Schaller. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, John P. B. Schaller. Mr. Schaller graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in Grosse Pointe, MI and Yale University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. During subsequent employment, he participated in a Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. He spent the majority of his career as a petrochemical business consultant. In the 1980's his career changed to the field of biotechnology and he servedas founding Chairman of the Board of Directors for Medarex, Inc. in Princeton, NJ and AstroPower, Inc., Newark, DE.He also served on the boards ofCelldex Therapeutic, Inc., and Eqenix, Inc. ,Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of Beaufort, Spring Island Club, Beaufort Economic Development Commission. After retirement, he enjoyed golf, bridge, nature, reading and completing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles in ink by dinner. He spent his time between his winter home in Okatie, SC and his summer home in Fairfield, CT. Surviving in addition to his wife of 37 years, Susan of Okatie, SC; are two sons, Charles R. Schaller, Jr. (Eleanor) of Annapolis, MD and William A. Schaller of Charleston, SC; one step son, William G. Harriss(Christine) of Birmingham, MI and one step daughter, Gretchen G.Shippee, Easton, CT; two brothers, Robert T. Schaller, Jr. and Christopher L. Schaller; five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, P. O. Box 2233, Beaufort, SC 29901, Lowcountry Institute, 40 Mobley Oaks Lane, Okatie, SC 29909 or Boys and Girls Club of Beaufort, P. O. Box 1482, Beaufort, SC 29901.
