Donald Kleber Obituary

Donald Raymond Kleber
Donald Raymond Kleber, 70, of Fairfield, CT, passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer on January 15th, 2024. Donald was born in Hoboken, NJ in 1952 to Raymond and Marie Kleber and was joined shortly after by younger siblings, Raymond and Diane. He grew up in New Jersey and attended Monmouth University to play basketball and earn a bachelor's degree in accounting. Don met the love of his life, Julianne, in 1976 on a blind date through mutual friends. Won over by his sense of humor and gregarious personality, Julianne and Don married in 1978. They lived together in Norfolk, VA for a few years before buying the house they would turn into a home in Fairfield, CT in 1981.
Don's greatest ambition was to become a Special Agent for the FBI, which he accomplished when he graduated from the FBI Academy in 1977. He had a storied career in the Norfolk, New York, and New Haven field offices, serving on the SWAT team and conducting many high-profile violent crime and terrorism investigations throughout his 29-year career. Don responded to the terrorist attacks on 9/11 and worked at the FBI command post in Manhattan. The side effects from his time near Ground Zero ultimately included the uveal melanoma that took his life.
Don and Julianne's son, Matthew, also works for the FBI and lives in Washington, DC with his girlfriend Kara Fenclau. Don was heavily involved in every aspect of Matthew's upbringing, including coaching him in sports that Don had never played himself. Don was a patient, encouraging, and supportive father who was very proud of his son.
Don will be missed by his many close friends from every stage of his life, many of whom are now close friends themselves because of Don. As they can attest, Don was the through-line across many groups of people. He organized trips all over the country from white water rafting the Colorado River to biking the Erie Canal and everywhere in between. He was persistent about keeping in close touch and was known for getting people from different groups together to join in his many hobbies like biking, bowling, tennis, and more. Don was active in his faith and his local parish at St. Pius X Church, helping organize fundraiser picnics and attending mass on Sundays.
Don will always be remembered as a selfless leader in his local community where he served as Police Commissioner, on the Ethics Committee for the Fairfield Police Department, and as a board member of the Lake Hills Association.
Don will always be remembered for his loyalty, problem solving, and the way that he never let an obstacle keep him from his goal. We'll sorely miss periodic text messages reminding us to "Make today a great day!" We couldn't have asked for a better husband, father, brother, and friend, and will miss Don every day.
Don was preceded in death by his mother, Marie and father, Raymond, and is survived by his wife, Julianne; his son, Matthew; his brother, Raymond; and his sister, Diane.
The wake will be on Sunday, January 21, 2024, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. in the Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center and the funeral will be on Monday, January 22, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment will follow at Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Foundation General Fund of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI (https://www.socxfbi.org/SFSA/Donate/Donate.aspx) would be greatly appreciated. Just heard this very sad news. I was a Lt with the Hartford Police and had the pleasure of meeting Don many times over the years. We rode the Unity Tour to DC a few times and I got to have many long con with him about the world on our four day ride to support Law Enforcement.
He was a bigger than life guy who was fun to be around. I am sure he is missed by all he knew.

My regards to his wife and family.

I am deeply saddened by the news of your loss. I was lucky to have first met Don when I was temporarily assigned to the Norfolk Division following graduation from the FBI Academy in the Fall of 1979. I was the new guy in the office and really appreciated the warm reception and offers to help me learn how to be a real agent from several experienced agents in the office. Don stands out as one of those veterans who was always there to advise or share valuable insight into everything from covering leads to transfers. After moving on to my Big Office( Chicago) as well as several other offices, I had countless occasions to see Don at Quantico and when our paths crossed usually in the NYO.He was always the same warm and friendly fellow agent whom I met in Norfolk. A big smile and hearty handshake followed the usual questions about what we were doing followed. I will miss Don and will always remember his friendship, sincerity, and warmth that made personal relationships such an important part of my career in the Bureau. He was truly a humble and amazing man. Thank you all for sharing him with the rest of us. May he rest in Peace in the Hands of the Lord.

Don was a class act for the FBI. It was a pleasure working with Don, and Im sure that my other peers {both SA and support} share my feeling. This is a sad day not only for my peers in the Bureau, but for Don's family, friends, neighbors and all those who were touched by his presence.

I first met Don over 50 years ago as he picked me up one morning hitchhiking to class at Monmouth College back in 1971. That one act of kindness led to a lifetime of friendship and adventure including becoming Phi Psi brothers, playing NBA one-on-one under the lights during exam week with the Voit logo being implanted on my forehead more times than I can remember, playing football in the "sewage bowl" during Thanksgiving, skiing at Hunter Mountain and making the last run of the day before he had to return back to DC and the FBI academy. His love of life, family and friendship to others was boundless and he will be deeply missed by all that knew him.
To Julianne, Matt and the rest of Don´s family, please take some comfort in knowing that he touched many lives and that he will be missed and remembered by every single one of them.

Julianne,I have many fond memories of Don from when we worked together as Agents in the New Rochelle, NY Office. During our off duty periods of recreation we often "schooled" local Iona College undergrads in the fine art of half court basketball. Of course, it mattered significantly that Don's skill and 6'5" frame dominated most challengers. Likewise, we participated successfully for several seasons in the highly competitive New Rochelle Industrial Softball League where our FBI team typically finished at the top. At work and at play Don was always super competitive. His participation on the SWAT Team and involvement in the "9/11" investigation were the hallmarks of a dedicated law enforcement career. He will be remembered.

Our condolences to Julianne and Matt. Don was my SWAT partner for several years and worked with me in New Rochelle and Connecticut as well as in the private sector after we both retired. He was a big man with a big heart. We will miss him.

We often hear people say " he is one of a kind" but in the case of Don or the Big Guy, it could not be more true. A true friend who always worked to get people together and went above and beyond to stay in touch. We will miss those bike rides and our tail gates at 16L at Met life and his opening day Yankee outings. We will truly miss Don but will cherish what he brought to so many people. A special person in my life for certain.
