E. Filter Obituary

FILTER E. Margie Filter, age 63, died on Thursday, January 8, 2004, from complications associated with ovarian cancer. Ms. Filter was a financial executive with Xerox Corp. for 30 years. She was the first female corporate officer of the company and served as vice president and treasurer for 11 years, as well as a vice president and corporate secretary for 17 years. She retired in 2002. She served on the board of directors of three New York Stock Exchange listed companies, including Briggs & Stratton Corp. and LaBranche & Co. She retired from the board of Baker Hughes Inc. in 2002, after serving the 10-year limit for directors. One of the first professional women on Wall Street, she began her career as a security analyst in 1966, with Morgan Guaranty Trust Co., and later worked with G.A. Saxton & Co. She was a member of the board of Cancer Care of Connecticut and previously served on the board of trustees of Wells College, Aurora, N.Y. She attended Wells College and graduated from City College of New York with a degree in economics. A 30-year resident of Westport, Ms. Filter is survived by her husband, Jerry Hostetter; a son, Henry C. Filter III of Stevensville, Md.; two grandchildren; and a brother, Edward E. Matthews, of Princeton, N.J. Her parents, Russell S. Matthews and Catherine Smith Matthews of Ridgewood, N.J., are deceased. The family will hold a private service on Saturday, TODAY, January 10, 2004. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2004, at the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Cancer Care of Connecticut, 120 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06851.
